driving range ball distance

I just replaced all my wedges. I played once with them but found these wedges go much further then my old set. I am going to head to the driving range today with my range finder and try to figure out the distances. Only problem is range balls dont go as far.

 

In your opionon how much yardage should I approx. add to each shot at the range?

 

Too bad I don't have an empty course where I can just hit 5 shots with each wedge to figure out the distances.

After you warm up, use your own old balls at the range to get your distance.

That could actually work. I have a bunch of banged up balls in my closet.

Go out on the course in the late evening on a flat hole. If a random group comes through wave them on.

 

 

And the distances range balls go really depends on the type of ball. I've found Nike and Wilson range balls don't go very far at all.

Those shorter distance of those range balls may not have anything to do with the manufacturer. Many of the ranges in the Seattle area now use limited flight range balls because of developed areas on the other side of the fence. One even has a sign at each hitting bay invoking a $500 fine to anyone hitting balls over the fence as there are horses grazing there. My guess is that range ball providers make different grades including limited flight.

There is a huge difference between brands/models of range balls. One of the ranges I go to has a mix of 3 or 4 different types of balls. I do a "bounce" test on concrete to confirm which models are dead. In this case it's the Nike balls, they bounce about 3/4 the height of a normal range ball. I sort them out and hit wedges with them to warm up.

 

They also just mixed in a bunch of new balls that are designed to be shorter aerodynamically. They look like the old small dimple balls from the 60's. They balloon up into the air quickly and don't fly very far.
