uPro or Approach G5

I have been looking at GPS systems that don't have an annual fee or membership. This would be my first unit, and I want to make an informed decision before I spend $300+ . I am pretty much set on getting either the uPro or Approach G5 and wanted to get opinions and comparisons on both. Likes and Dislikes. Thanks.

I own both. BUT...I haven't played with the uPro yet. Should do that on Thursday. The Garmin "cartoons" of the holes doesn't give you any real visual data about layup areas, junk, OB, etc. Especially for a new course you don't understand, the uPro pictures are much better.

 

G5+ Rugged, touch screen, keeps score, no further costs beyond purchase, easy to move flagstick for accurate distance.

 

G5- Bulky, heavy, battery thirsty, no real depiction of course/holes.

 

Keeping in mind I've only used the uPro in practice mode (studying holes I've played before)

 

uPro+ Actual course images, small, light, battery life and rechargability (and spare battery option). Lower cost to enter with rebate now $300.

 

uPro- Cost for courses, no touch screen, can't keep score/stats, no real way to position flagstick.

 

Waiting to see if the uPro completely trumps the G5 before it hits eBay.

I have the uPro and love it. No experience with the other one, so my review will be brief.

 

The basic mode for courses is excellent (and free) and provides what you really need. The flyovers aren't too big of a deal, but the anypoint technology is something I use many times every round. I've purchased Pro Mode for my home course and will get another for a course I play regularly. The courses I'm likely to only visit once or twice, I use basic mode.

 

I think its quite easy to position the flagstick in Pro Mode... you can get distance to absolutely any point on the green, so estimating where the flag stick is and getting exact yardage is quite simple.

 

FWIW, uPro has been promising a shot tracking/stats feature as an add-on, which is supposed to be coming this summer. It originally was due in Feb. though, so no one knows when they might actually add it.

I just bought the uPro from Amazon. It's what I was leaning towards to begin with, but with the $100 rebate Callaway is offering now, it became a no-brainer for me. Check the other thread, but you can buy it from Amazon for $328 less $100 rebate for a net cost of $228. It even ships for free (if you don't mind waiting for the super saver shipping).

UPro- explodes on impact. I saw a friends become several pieces last weekend.

 

That $100 rebate is hard to look over too. I love my Garmin, but with that rebate the UPRO is the way to go.

Amazon was selling it at $328 before Callaway announced the $100 rebate. It took them several days to change the price. I don't know if it was because demand increased so much, or maybe Callaway said something. But in any case, I and several others here bought it at the low price before they changed it. Just lucky.

 

Now, you may want to go with gppgolf, which has it for $350 plus $10 shipping.

bump to this thread, i am in the same situation. i am going to go buy a gps unit tomorrow but i am torn between the g5 and upro (and all my golf buddies swear by the sg5 so that as well). I really like the upro and hear that there is going to be a major update coming soon but i have always been a garmin guy for my gps needs. help please.

i've been using the g5 for a couple of weeks now and love it. distances are accurate, menus are simple, the screen is easy to read in sunlight, and updating the unit is a breeze. the only downsides are the lack of courses (for now) and the price. $300 for a upro seems like a great price, though. if i had to do it all over again, i would still go with the g5.

the only thing i did not like about the g5 was the cartoon like graphics. i was on the fence with the g5 and upro but the promised updates and price pushed me to go upro. if the g5 ever gets better graphics and a stat tracking update i will buy one that day:)

I can't say enough good things about the uPro. Just played my first 18 and it was spot on. Always within a yard of my buddies golf guru and at no point did I find it inaccurate. The sat view is amazing and really helps you know where you are on the course.
