Reality vs. Perception w/ Golf shafts

Have we all been fooled into thinking high priced shafts are better? I see LPGA, PGA and senior tour players every week playing 60-80 dollar shafts. Yet we all think that we need a $300 shaft to make us hit the ball well. i think most tour players and us can be fitted with a 60-80 dollar shaft that would perform as well as any high priced shaft.

I dont know how many times I gotta say this..... and I mean this is the nicest way

but what gives you the right to tell people what is good for them and how to spend THEIR money...if someone is asking you it would be different, but no one is.

Hope you dont take this the wrong way.....but I want others to get the message as well. Rarely do these thread go in a good direction.

It's all about fitting the shaft to the player and his/her swing. If that shaft happens to be $300 fine. If it happens to be $60 fine.

Not having a huge amount of disposable cash lying around I would be extremely reluctant to shell out more than say $120 for a shaft. That doesn't mean I should have a problem with other people spending their money on a pricey shaft. After all, it is their money to spend how they please.

On the other hand there are some people (almost all of them on another site) who claim that if you don't spend $250 or more on a shaft you are at a huge disadvantage. This is also not cool.

Johnny,

I don't think raddawg meant it that way. Many people think more expensive shafts mean better, which raddawg is trying to suggest that it's not always the case. Of course, let's say there are two shafts with exact same specs, same kick point, same frequency, same tourqe and so on. One costs $80 and the other one costs $250. If one is willing to pay $250 to use a shaft that he believes it will perform better. Sure, it's their money. Anyway, I'm not saying that cheaper shafts will have the same specs as the expensive ones, but maybe the cheaper ones may fit most public golfers better.

For me, I always look at the specs; weight, kick point and torque, and then I will choose the flex. If I can find a good one at a good deal, I will use whatever that matches my specs.

he is my issue with low cost shafts.... quality and process control.

Sure I have found low cost shafts, even cheaper then 80 bucks that felt fine to me.... but I can have 3-4 of these low cost shafts and they will very in CPM, torque and even how they feel. Were as even a mid-grade shaft will be much more consistent from shaft to shaft and a high dollar fuji or other make will be within 1-2 cpm from each other. Besides that you have so MANY choices in terms of kickpoint and torque, feel etc when you move to the $$$$ shafts all in trying to find a shaft that fits your swing. Not an easy thing to do, I know I have 3-4X as many shafts as clubs to put them in.

Yes I do think the creator of this thread is trying to take a cheap shot at high dollar shaft users. Look at the way it's worded..quite obvious to me. Think about it this way...I could get to work just fine with a geo metro, but it sure would be better in a S55 AMG wouldn't it.

I'm not knocking low dollar shafts, I've played alot of them, hell even stock shafts which we know are with about 5 bucks tops. Yes some have been good and some not so good. It's all about customization and you have to admit the number of options a company like fujikura has for example is amazing. They are giving people want they want, if there was not a demand for it they wouldn't be around very long would they.
