square faced Driver

the most forgiving square faced driver?
What do you guys think from your experiences? I first started to play with a square faced driver but my last few 450+cc drivers had a closed faced and but I tend to hook/pull my drives so that didn't help me there. I was thinking maybe Callaway FT-3/X460 tour or the Sasquatch Tour? and what's with the SQ Max? Can't seem to find any on any website or eBay?

The MX-500 has a square face, even in the highest lofted heads and is extremely forgiving. It also has a relatively flat lie angle, as does the FT-3 Tour. The lie angles and face angles of these two heads work to mitigate tendencies for left side misses. The SQ Maxes have square face angles and put little sidespin on the ball and could work if you need or prefer more upright lie angles.

square to open doesn't equal forgiveness. That is why people like cobra hook their big drivers by several degrees so people can square the face at impact. If the club is open at impact and you don't have the speed you aren't going to square a square to open club.

By the way I was told by a couple of the Pinnacle long drive guys they actually prefer a slightly closed face. So if it is good enough for a 159 mph swing maybe some 80-110 mphs should also consider it despite it's funny look at address. This was their response to a teenage LDA wannabee who prefered an open face to help get an effectively lower lofted club through the ball. They offered to let him try a couple of their 4.5s or 6.5s with a very slightly closed face. He declined and crept away.

I also had to laugh at the specs that the various manufacturers publish. The face angles are just as much a "fib" as the lofts. Callaway lists their FT-3 Tour series as .05 degrees open. Not .5 degree open but .05--pleeeezse. I bet if you purchased 100 FT-3s you wouldn't find 1 that measured .05 degrees open. That is if you could find an instrument that could measure them. So if you buy an FT-3 Tour you get a .05 more open face than if you buy an X-460 Tour listed as square. Too much time around heated epoxy :)

Time to pull the other leg.

Sleepy,

What loft are you playing with?

What type of spin rate you have?

There is one Cobra driver that may fit you well.

COMP 454 7.5

The face sits square.I liked this driver but the shaft produced too much spin for me. This would only be a good fit if you have a pretty high launch.

Stock shaft is a SL-45 (45 grams, low-kick) or a YS-5.5 (55 grams, mid-kick).

ALOHA,

Duffer96734 :)

My last driver was the non-tp 9.5* R5 with the Speeder 757 stiff and everything was ok except the very closed looking face at address. I'm not looking for a perfectly square or open face but one that looks pretty square at address. Most of my miss hits are to the left so I was thinking that maybe even the slightly closed retail FT-3 tour would be ok to try.

The HiBore is, by a very wide margin, the clearest and best recommendation that I can think of in this area.

Titleist drivers are not all square. The 905 R is at least generally better than most of the S's and T's that I have seen, but Titleists, in any event, are not all square. Taylor Mades are even worse. The squarest retail R5 TP that I could find still needed to be bent more open. The good thing about TM's is that at least you can bend them. Some low-lofted Callaways are square, and some low-lofted Pings are square.

The HiBores are as square as anything out there right now.
