Deciphering Early PING Eye 2 serial numbers

Do certain numbers have more value?

I bought a set of Ping Eye 2's when they just came out. They had very torque-y early versions of Aldila graphite shafts when hardly any companies were putting stock graphite in the iron shafts. Taylor Made had just started putting gold shafts in the Tour Burners that year. A set of Apex II's or Wilson FG-17's were still the club of choice among the big boys. Ah....the good old days

The serial numbers stamped on my PING hosels are GR688. Does this mean they were the 688th set of Graphite shafted Eye 2's out of the factory?

If yes, does that add any value or collectibility to them?

My father has them in his basement and at his age....he thinks everything is junk that oughta be thrown out. I need to convince him to keep them till I get back there.

The serial number doesn't matter too much. On the Eye 2's, its the patent numbers and markers on the club that are used to identify which version of the Eye 2 it is. There were several versions over the years, kind of like a car that has a few tweaks each year but is still called the same thing. You can figure out the model you have by going to the Ping site and looking at what separates each one.

 

The most valuable sets of Eye 2 irons (aside from BeCU) are the plus no plus version. They were only made for a few months in late 89 and early 90. They essentially were the plus models (stonger lofts, less bounce) but with the really good grooves. That was right around the time the lawsuit was settled.
