Getting a handicap...

...how do I go about getting one? I don't have the time or resources to go and join a club. any 'economical' way of getting an established handicap?

I can join a "club" at a local course here for $25/year for handicap purposes. Call some local courses and ask if they offer handicap services and how much the cost is. They'll be happy to tell you.

thanks for the quick reply, mini! would i have to post scores manually or do the local courses offer online postings? - i live in Kaimuki, so the nearest nonmuniciple course would be Pearl CC. also, do i post my 9 hole twilight play also?

I get my handicap through nethandicap.com. I think it's around $15 a year. You just plug in your scores online. Pretty simple to use. Helps you track your stats too.

A free USGA handicap? Really? How does one do that?

Or are you speaking of some other handicap convention that wouldn't allow you to play in many handicap tournaments?

www.myscorecard.com. only 10 bucks per year. 9 bucks per year if you sign up for 2 years. 8 if you sign up for 3. Can't beat it...

Depends on the golf association that administers the handicap. My local GA's allow internet postings as I'm sure most do by now. When I go set mine up, I probably won't physically turn in a card for the rest of the year. I normally don't play that course. They're a little too "upity" for me.

www.stracka.com offers a free usga handicap. Also has nice features allowing you to track stats. I don't have any experience using it for tournament purposes but, since it is usga, I don't think it would be a problem.

Couldn't find any info on GHIN, so I would assume it is not... could be wrong though

In the past, the courses that put on tournaments were getting all kinds of entries with handicap cards coming from various handicap services. In an effort of uniformity, the HSGA decided to aggressively persuade all golf facilities to use GHIN. Additionally, it was agreed that only GHIN cards could be used to verify handicaps for tournament entries.

I'd say just about every course that offers a handicap service in Hawaii uses GHIN. You can also visit ghin.com for more details.

Signed up for nethandicap.com.....looks neat and my course was listed but not the tees i play...I would have to add them...and then someone confirm them.


I am interested in playing maybe some local USGA Mid-Ams/Qualifiers? state opens, etc....

What is the BEST way to make sure what I'm signing up for will be legit and I won't show up at an event and be Non-Qualified because of a USGA/ (enter website here) problem.(I read the Hawaii problem above and am getting cold feet regarding online Handicap)

True...I get my GHIN through Royal Kunia Country Club. Very easy to set up....just see one of the guys in the shop.

If you live in kaimuki, you have OCC, or hawaii Kai GC closer than Pearl

Something like $14 per year at Olomana. Post online at GHIN or use Diablo app on an android phone. The summary comes out twice a month so pick up the updated card (peel n stick) at the front desk. The folks are nice n helpful. I use an old HMSA card to stick the handicap updates on. You can also print them out from the GHIN update emails. Then handicap is public record so it'll be looked up when you enter a club or other tournament. (tip) Anyone can look up your handicap at the GHIN so be sure to post the "right" scores. Anyway, see anyone at the front desk at Olomana and they'll fix you up right away.

I don't know if it was mentioned, but I was checking out Turtle Bay's site and they have a kamaaina package that includes a a ghin membership and also a free round on either course. Sounds like a deal to me.
