North of the Thames?

Please recommend good London courses that are north of the Thames. No private courses, but course where anybody can play if they pay.

I'm assuming that you mean courses within the M25? If that's the case then most tend to allow visitors during the week, and in the afternoons at weekends (although the more exclusive ones only allow visitors during the week).

My personal favourite is The Shire in Barnet (5 mins drive from High Barnet tube), which is a Seve designed course with lots and lots of water. It is rather pricey though, so if you want a cheaper option then Hendon (5 mins walk from Mill Hill East tube) is a nice course, but does get very wet in the winter (as do most North London courses for that matter). Mill Hill is also a nice course at a reasonable price, and is iust up the road from Hendon.

If you want a real bargain then North Middlesex (5 mins drive from Woodside Park tube) is very cheap and is a nice little course with some lovely holes.

You are really spoilt for choice in North London though, and I have at least 10 courses which are 15 mins or less away by car from my home in Mill Hill, with many also reachable easily by tube and taxi.

I work in Borehamwood and find those courses restrictive and quirky. Try further out and play Knebworth, or even go West towards Bucks and Berks; you will find some great parkland courses. But that is what I'm used to.....

agreed, its 5 minutes from here. It's in great condition most of the time and great country club service. However it is pricey.

I've never putted on greens as quick as theirs inland UK

Agree The Grove is good but not great, if you like fast inland greens go to the Buckinghamshire; rather swift . Also try Burnham & Berrow for good links greens at a great price; probably my favourite track without blowing the bank (I make the trip 3 times a year).

The greens certainly were fantastic, as were the facilities, but the course was just average IMO and certainly not worth £100+.

I'd also agree that there are better courses further outside London, so it's probably best if the OP let's us know where he'll be staying, how much he's willing to pay, and how far he's willing to travel. As Roland said, we might even be able to arrange a meet up.

Hi, saw the post and thought I would add my penny to the discussion. Stockley Park is a nice course near Heathrow and they have just made some changes to the course so it should be open once again. The you have some nice courses owned by "Crown Golf" such as Traditions or Pine Ridge...Most of these courses charge less than £30 are are good courses... then again as mentioned earlier you can up the stakes and go for The Shire - I have played there and it is a nice course... you really need course management. The on the higher end of the price scale you have Wentworth West (opening in March), Brabazon at the Belfry, The London Club. all of these are excellent... Anyway - good luck and if you fancy a game and a side bet then get in touch...

Just ordered the book - I am planning a trip to the UK next year in order to play some of the great courses in the London area.
