I currently dont, but am seriously thinking about throwing a TT DG Lite S300 in my 983K

My backup is a 983K with a Rifle 7.0. I'm using it this weekend because my primary driver's graphite shaft looks like it is starting to crack a little (at least the paint has two ~4-6" lengthwise hairlines about 180* apart). Anyone with a similar experience, please PM me.

i used to play a 983K 9.5 with TT DGS300...it was an awesome driver...long and straight...only problem was the guy at golfgalaxy left it at 46" so it weighed like what 135+ grams so it was heavy as a b1tch...id definately consider a steel shaft again assuming it was 43.5-44". hope this helps.

I am seriously considering a DG SL X100 in my driver. Have them in my irons and hit them long and straight, as long and straighter than any graphite shafted iron I've hit. Seems to reason the same should hold true for the driver.

It just seems like playing a steel shaft in your driver is like shooting yourself in the foot in order to run faster.

 

Truth is we are only a couple of years from having graphite in all of our clubs. From Tour Pros to old women. There is nothing of my knowledge that can be done with a steel shaft that can't be done better with a graphite.

I think the gap b/w steel and graphite is closing (and graphite even gives more control re: flex and kick point), but I did run across a comment in Golf Digest by a staff member at Hot Stix golf that said, for now, it was eaier to get consistency across an iron set by using steel shafts, and they encouraged steel-shafted irons for almost everyone they fit, except for those with arthritis (i.e. vibration a big deal).

With the increased weight of the driver shaft, no matter how strong you are you are giving up swing speed, thus giving up distance no matter what. I will not attempt to sway anyone here because I am sure most are set in their feelings but I will say this. There is not much of a need for steel in this day and age. Those with extremely high swingspeeds at one point played steel due to the consistency because of weight but also because of its incredibly low torque. With these new graphite shafts out there, there is not much of a reason to play steel for the torque characteristics. The UST v2 75 is 2.1* the accuflex evolution is nearing the same. If you want even less the v2 86 is 1.8* and the v2 95 is 1.5ish. The torque numbers on these should be sufficiently low for just about anyone. Not a perfect example and by no means a cath-all, but even tiger has gone down to a low torque 80 gram shaft. If youre really looking for something steel the bimatrix might be a great fit. Very few players left on the tour play ultra heavy graphite shafts or steel, Sergio is one of the few playing the rombax 105 tp.

 

Note: I know posts like these often times stir up some trouble from those with die hard beliefs. I will reiterate that the point of this post as I said is neither to change minds nor to cause an argument so please don't spend the time to argue because I am not looking for an intellectual battle or a battle of golfing knowledge. The point of this post was merely to present another view on the steel v. graphite issue. Take this for what it is worth as just an opinion and please continue to keep the spirit of this board alive and keep the posts clean.
