Duval makes the cut with a four under back nine!

Look out, Double "D" is in the top 20 after a 4 under par back nine in the second round. He keeps saying he is playing good so it will be fun to watch him this weekend. For the week he is 5 over on the front nine and 6 under on the back nine. It is good to see him under par on a tough course. I noticed thursday on T.V. that he was putting cross handed which is a notable change for him. I know he has putted terrible this year, so maybe that will help him sink a few more.

I would like to see David Duval play well and make a couple cuts, i think he is one of those people that fans like to see do well.

 

I hate to pull for him to much as the Nike Posse will have way to much to be happy about and i am sure we will have to hear about it. :)

Putting up BIG numbers is what is killing his scores.

 

I'm a big fan of DD. I hope he continues to play well and gains the confidence that he needs.

He still has the career top 50 money exemption for next year if he does not get into the top 125. But it seems like he is motivated to get back in top form. He plans on playing more tournaments in the next few months.

how short is his putter! it looks like its 24". when his caddy was holding it, it looked like something off the US kids rack. And then when he was putting he was so hunched over the thing that it looked painfull.

Could anyone fill me in on what happened to him? I remember that back in 2000/2001 he was one of the top players in the world and now everybody is excited when he makes the cut? Sorry if this is a dumb question but something must have happened and I obviously am out of the loop. Thanks

Actually it was his back injury, bout with vertigo, and the break up of his 8-year engagement that were the real causes--why anyone would go 8 years with the same woman and not be married is beyond me, but he's a crazy guy!

homez he started to lose weight and well his game suffered from it. Now hes coming back to his old bulky self and hes getting better. He just got into a slump. He did finish T-22nd so that bumps him up the Money list for sure.

I don't think his weight loss really had anything to do with it considering in 2000 and 2001 he was already skinny and don't forget he won the British Open in that year--pretty impressive numbers the whole year!!

Actually, there are a number of theories. One being that after his runner up finish to Tiger in the 2001 Masters, he tried to adjust his swing to allow him to hit a draw that would play well at Augusta National. The draw turned into a hook and he forgot how to hit his "go to" fade, essentially losing his swing. Another is that his break up with his fiance' changed his focus away from golf, and he lost the desire to compete. The reason he cites is that he had a spate of injuries, including a continuing back injury, wrist and shoulder injuries, and a bout of vertigo, that forced him into bad habits in his posture and address position and changed the pane of his swing. Over time, the habits became ingrained, and he "lost" the repeatable swing he had prior to the injuries.

 

He has been working with his old college coach, Puggy Blackmon, in an effort to recapture his old swing. I watched him on Wednesday at the Masters, and he was as good as ever - birdied 10, 11, 15 and 16, and eagled 13. His swing is back in casual rounds and on the range. IMO, he is still not completely confident in it on the course. According to Blackmon, he gets tentative during competitive rounds, and is afraid to "let it go" at times. The result is a "lazy," guided swing that is not fast enough to keep up with his lower body. He ends up flipping his hands to square the club face, and hits these nasty pull hooks. It is a double whammy of sorts because he is afraid to hit the pull hook, and his fear is what causes him to do it. I think this will subside as he has more success on the golf course. Wachovia boasts a tough course, and he really struck the ball well. A few more solid rounds on tough courses like that could do wonders for DD's confidence. When he starts swinging the club confidently, and starts making a few of the short putts he has been missing, he will be a handful for the rest of the field.

 

Results aside, he is still a phenomenal talent that has a definite "it" factor when you watch him hit balls. His ball flight and the sound of contact is amazing, even among the best players in the world. In any event, golf is more interesting when he is in contention, as he is one of the few players in the world who is capable of really going low on the toughest courses in the world. I'd love to see him back in top form week in and week out.

The funny rumor/urban legend was TW told DD he should work out more and lose some weight if he wanted to win at Augusta and stay around a long time. DD fell for it and the rest was quite a slippery slope.
