"Reputation" rating in My Profile

Similar to the Smite / Applaud fest over on PutterTalk.com

So I just figured out how the "Reputation" rating in each of our "My Profile" areas works. In the lower righthand corner of every post a person makes is a + / - that can be used by everyone in the membership to opine on whether the post was good (+) or bad (-). These votes determine what your "Reputation" rating is.

For those of you who are members on PutterTalk, you will liken this rating to the "Smite / Applaud" fest that took place a few months back when the site was updated. It was all in good humor as some people were buried under "Smites", but long term it would have turned into a meaningless system. It was quickly "turned off" by the site leaders.

Could be fun for a little while...

I'm not a fan of this +/- system, but I don't think it effects your profile rep. There are 5 stars at the top of your profile and users click those to rate you. It averages out based on number of votes and stars you receive.

It doesn't affect the "stars" rating or your "Feedback", just the "Reputation" tag in your "My Profile" page under your pic. It starts out grey with no hits, but once someone gives you a "-" it changes to blood red with a big "-1" next to it. Click on my screen ID and view my profile and you will see what I'm talking about.

The reputation for the most part is meant to hilight highly voted posts in topics after x points. It won't do anything however to affect the order of display, or color beyond that. Your user status is also unaffected besides the score(which can be turned off). Though it can be made positive only as well like I just did.

Oh yeah, now I see what you're talking about. I like it even less now.

The stars rating is bad enough since not everyone is allowed to vote on the number of stars. In general, popularity contests like this are abused and become worthless very quickly. Making it positive only isn't much better.

Upon Further Review, we are going to try positive only. I'm not sure which group is restricted from rating posts but, I did up it so that it will not show a rating for a post until 10 votes are cast.

"Members" wasn't able to under the old board and neither is the "Peanut Gallery." I'm not talking about rating posts. I'm talking about rating entire threads and members (stars). Only a few groups have that power and it's already abused. Adding karma is going to exacerbate the problem.

I think the system was "new" or at least not fully thought out in the previous system as those settings are global and I don't see them as a per group option in this version. I have disabled member to member profile rating which should be different that reputation which is set to positive votes only.

Either way, the playing field should be even now and only positive rep points can be applied. Posts star ratings are still in effect.

Can you go in and out of your sig? I want to see if the non used fields go away.

Just notice I have 1 "reputation" and it is Neutral. So how do I find out what post it refers to?
