Groove rule

Recommended Posts

PGA Tour only or us too?
Is the new groove rule only for the PGA/European/Nationwide, etc Tours or are they directed at us weekend warriors too? The reason I ask is that I plan on playing in some local amateur tournaments this year (never played competitively before) and wanted to know if my "old" grooves are okay to use. Thanks!

"The rules apply to clubs manufactured after Jan. 1, 2010, the same year that the USGA will enforce the new regulations through a condition of competition for the U.S. Open, U.S. Women's Open and U.S. Senior Open and each of their qualifying events. All USGA amateur championships will apply the new regulations through the condition of competition, after Jan. 1, 2014.

The PGA Tour, the European PGA Tour, the LPGA, the PGA of America and the International Federation of PGA Tours have all indicated their support for the new regulations on grooves. Each of these organizations, as well as the Augusta National Golf Club, have told the USGA and The R&A, the game's governing bodies, that they intend to adopt the condition of competition, applying the rules for their competitions, beginning on January 1, 2010."

Strictly speaking clubs that were in manufacturing prior to 1/1/2010 can continue to be manufactured and sold until the end of 2010.

As a "weekend warrior" it's not something you need to worry about for many years (probably 2024).

But, strictly speaking, the Rule does already exist as a possible condition of competition. So, any committee could choose to apply the new groove rule condition. However, they would be going against the recommendations of the application of the rule set out by the USGA. And more importantly, if you showed up at your local member-guest and they put the groove condition in place, there would probably be rioting and looting.
i will practice with a set of mp-62's but i just got my cg7 BP tours from the cleveland promotion yesterday and WOW, these are definatly gonna be my gamers this year.
Not sure if you meant to post that in another thread, but just to be clear the MP-62s comply with the new groove rule. As do every other Mizuno iron if I'm not mistaken. I believe the only club Mizuno has made that doesn't comply is the new MP T-10 wedge.

You are correct that the MP-62's do comply. But, it is not true that "the only club Mizuno has made that doesn't comply is the new MP T-10 wedge." There are several clubs that Mizuno has made that do not comply (S-30, MX-19, MX-100, etc.) including the MP T series..

That is exactly why I prefaced my statement with "I believe..." (the part you didn't quote).

Actually, I did quote that part. Your entire post is quoted, in my response. There was no intent to misrepresent what you said. My apologies if I did.
