with nike blades?
Did anyone see during the final round of the British Masters at The Belfry on Sunday Paul Casey hit a 5 iron from 230 yards into the wind to about 8 feet, i think it was one of the closing holes, 16th, 17th or 18th, he uses Nike blades doesn't he? How can a guy hit a 5i 230 into the wind with a type of club that is pretty much extinct? The ball?

- The hole was the 17th

- He was playing some new Nike blades (for him),

- It was definatly down wind.

- Playing a Nike ball but not sure which.....

- Missed 8 foot putt for eagle.......

- Not his day.

Played very well for 3 days controlled agression and rode a hot putter......

Sunday putter went very cold. :)

I am in the UK and was watching the BBC coverage. They definately said it was 230 to the pin and into the wind. It was not downhill, he carried it all the way to about 8 feet and yes, he missed the putt to tie for the lead. It was a monsterous shot. The commentators said it was "unbelievable"

In the UK also and also watched the BBC coverage, "after" I returned from the Belfry. Whether they said it was into the wind or not is irrelevant. It was not into the wind.................... :)

Had it on DVR and just watched the replay after reading this thread. It does not look like a 5 iron that he was using, I would've guessed 2 or 3 iron or something like that from the length of the club that he just handed to his caddy. I did not see any wind since the 17th flag looked limp when Casey hit his 2nd shot from 231 yds out on 17th hole.

are we sure it was a 5i, golf announcers get clubs wrong all the time. I could believe a 3i carried 230.

I sometimes question these pull calls by the announcers.

The caddies generally were very cool to the Shotlink idea, since it involved them doing a lot more work for no pay. Sometimes on the coverage you'll see the caddie making the finger signal to the commentator, and I've long suspected that a lot of 4 irons become 6 irons on the coverage, with 6s becoming 7s or 8s.

Unless the announcer is watching the pull or sees the number, I think there are a few rogue caddies that like to play the TV folks.

No one is making a point about him being a Euro, nor is anyone casting doubt on your announcers, which by the way, are generally much better than their American counterparts.

This has to do with the fact that someone of avg. size hit a 5 IRON!!! 230 YARDS!!!. That is phenomenal and makes the rest of the golfing public wonder what these guys are doing differently.

We're all just jealous. It's not about Euro or "Yank" it's just 5 iron = 230 yards, and that makes us jealous and some will try to explain it or make excuses as to why he hit the 5i so far.

Quit being so defensive (or we'll drill for oil in your home town and bomb you ;) )

come on now, Americans wouldn't bomb a country just for oil would they ;) ! Bush hasn't got anything to do with oil. it must be a coincidence that the countries on his hit-list are all rich in oil and he's from Texas*.

* Note: comment may have been 'slightly' sarcastic.

about the 5 iron though, we all have times where we rip a club much furthur than normal. this is just a case of that. i bet he has also hit a 5 iron distances that are a lot smaller than his average aswell but they don't get any attention.

That wouldn't be the case here though because why would he choose a 5 iron if he didn't expect it to go that far? He took whatever club he though he could get there with and that just happened to be a 5i. Amazing power.

It was a heck of a shot. Casey is a heck of a player. They can do things we can only dream about.

That takes moxy to step up to a 230 yard shot and think "5i sounds good here". I just wonder if that is a stock 5i for him or if he did something special with his swing that he doesn't normally do which creates more risk and the shot just came off perfectly.

I played in a pro am with Casey and while he hits it a ton. The wind probably wasnt very strong. On a par 3 that was 180 he hit 7 iron with me so it is reasonable that he could max out a 5 iron 225 or so. Also he is an extreme high ball hitter. He said he rarely plays any type of punch shot.
