Sonartec T1 Tour Wedge Review (After 4 rounds)

So I finally have time to do a write up on these. I graduated from college on Friday and had way too much stuff goin on. Anyways...

I have recently acquired a pair of T15 Tour Sonartec wedges from Chip Usher. They are 53° and 58°, (I had a 54° bent to 53°.) They both have N.S.Pro 1150GH Tour X-Flex shafts in them. These do not have milled faces, but they are raw, rusting, and really sharp! I have been anticipating a trial run since I talked to Jim Uno at the Nissan Open and snapped a couple of close up shots of the protos. (By the way, Jim Uno is a class act! He talked to me for at least an hour at the Nissan, gave us a Trion:Z and his business card in case we had any questions he could answer.) I am taking my P.A.T. on June 5th and these wedges are a great addition to my game. I had a 52,56,60 set up, but decided i need a Hybrid/5 wood. That was the reason for the switch. I am still looking for the right hybrid to try, the MD is definelty in my sights...

On with the review!

These wedges are amazing. They replaced my cleveland 900 tours, which I thought would never happen. Ask pga_apprentice about those, I had them dialed in. The Sonartec wedges have great feel. Even better performance, trajectory control, consistency and exceptional spin control. I can't say enough about the design of the clubs. The grind is amazing and exactly what I have been looking for. I believe it is a "V" grind, if your familiar with the lettered grinds. The wedges set up perfect at address. They are just oozing with confidence! I work at a course with elevated greens and get nasty thin uphill lies all the time. A shot that I am not exactly trying to leave myself! I have no problems now. The sole grind allows the club to sit perfectly behind the ball, no more thin or skull shots!

An unknown but welcomed surprise was that my wedges were raw!!! :crazy: I had originaly thought they would not rust and I would have to have them bead blasted or something.

The biggest difference I noticed between the Clevelands and the Sonartecs is the consistency on full shots. Not just accuracy, but spin consistency and trajectory are awesome. I had trouble with over-cooking the clevelands, hit em left and spin em left. I hit the T1's straight at the hole and it spins back about 3 feet for me every time. I am not afraid to bring the ball in low with lots of spin. The 900's were inconsistent with spin on knock down shots and found myself ont he back fringe often. Hasn't happened yet with these.

The only negative thing I can say about these wedges is that on shorter chip shots I tend to leave the ball about 4 feet directly to the right of the hole. I have the perfect distance, but 3 or 4 feet to the right. I am not sure why, my initial thoughts are the grind opens the face up on me and I get lazy with my hands through impact. Something that I need to fix, not them!

How would you compare the spin to some of the newer wedges - xtour, y cutter, spin mill etc?

I'm not sure if they have yoyo grooves or not. That may be a question for Sonartec1. I think you have to have milled faces for yoyo grooves. In any case they spin. The spin is great for me. I don't like a lot, never really got a lot so I am play a bump and run style more than a drop stop. But they spin as much as the new Xtour MD grooved weges. I think the Ycutters and Spin Milled's spin more. But my wedges do not have milled faces....so.....

I got the last 54 from Chip Usher. You can ask him though, he may get more. He also had 52°'s, so he could bend one of those. www.chipandputt.com

The grooves on this wedge are a early edition of the yoyo grooves.
