Hogan Apex iron model shaft questions

Forgive me if this has been aready asked but why is it for the most part when I find Hogan Apex sets ( 1972 original's through 1983 Apex II's) The Apex shafts seem to almost always be a "3"? Not that I'm complaining, I like the 3. Whenever I see sets of the '84-'87 Apex PC's and onward to the '06 Apex's they always seem to be a "4" or TT S300. Why is this? Did Hogan change to "4" as standard shaft in the mid '80s after AMF/Minstar sold the company? Or is it that demand for the stiffer shaft picked up around the time the PC was released? I know that the "3" was mostly found on the Radials, Magnums,Edge etc. but it seems that after 1984, almost all Apex models had Apex 4 shafts standard?

I dont know the exact answer but here is a thought. The years u are talking about is also when Ping Eye 2's came out. Ping had all their shafts stiff when they came out during that time frame. So maybe that was the thought process at that time. Would explain a bit the 4s in the hogans. Also the clubs with 3s are the c radials, edges, as a more forgiving club so maybe the thought was the better golfer bought the apex with stiff, the average golfer bought the radials and edges so the 3s. Just a thought.

The 3's are a regular shaft. The 4's are a stiff shaft, even though they arent the same thing as a DGS300. If you think about it, a player that uses stiff shaft's more than likely is a better player than a regular type guy. (NOW BEFORE WE START AN UPROAR) We are talking about the 1970's and the 1980's. It was a different golfing world, back then. Better player's played, and practiced much more. Hence 1970's stiff shafted irons are more than likely in a very poor condition. The Hogan PC model is a very hard to hit model of irons. They were my first new set of clubs, and I really like them. So very few people hit Hogan PC's in regular flex as it took a good player to play pretty consistent with them. So that could be the reason why you see very few PC sets with No 3 shafts.

The Hogan shafts of that era compared: Hogan No. 3-- DGR500 Hogan N0. 4--- DGS500 and they did make these shafts.

You very seldon saw the Hogan Apex irons or the Directors and PCs in the 3 shaft. The vast majority of players used the Apex 4 iron shaft. I did and everyone I knew did as most everyone played Hogan irons in the 70s (if they didn't play Wilson Staff). I loved that shaft. My feeling was that it wasn't as tip stiff as the Dynamic shafts of the day.

Just found a set of Directors 2-E in Apex 3 at the local thrift shop for about 30.00. They need some clean up but look to be in decent shape

Which version? The 70's version, busier on the back with a medallion, or the 80's version (plain on the back)? I have a set of the 80's directors and they have the Vector 3 shafts which are unique in that they taper quickly below the handle, then taper back up in the middle of the shaft before tapering again toward the club head. Although their a "3", they're stiffer than today's "R".

AltusBeliever is correct. Those of us old enough to have played golf in the 60s and 70s would have most likely purchased Hogan irons with a no.4 shaft. I still have a set of Apex irons I purchased in 1977 with no. 4 shafts. I see some used sets with 3 shafts in stores like Play-it-Again Sports today, but most players buying a set in 1975 would have purchased the no. 4 shafts.
