Gauge Japan Balde

Recommended Posts

I initially found this putter on Ebay but after contacting the seller regarding shipping cost, I found out he was presently located locally and that I could skip the shipping charges, check out the putter in person and buy one directly from him. I also found out he was Chris from TSG.

I met up with Chris in a parking lot of all places next to Fishermans Wharf near the water. A totally "un-golf" like place. He opened up his trunk and pulled out the Gauge Japan Balde for me to see. I immediately was taken back by the color. It was a deep dark charcoal almost opalescent color. Similar to a oil can but darker. The milling on the face was incredible. The workmanship was really far superior to a lot of putters that I have seen. And finally as compared to the Gauge David Whitlams....there was no comparison. I'm not downing DW's, but I've had a few and still own a old proto of his but they didn't come close to the Gauge Japan workmanship and feel.

The Gauge Japan Balde I have is 350grams, 34",made of carbon steel and is 100% CNC milled. The face features the "new for Gauge Japan" milled face with vertical grooves. The vertical grooves work similarly to the C Grooves in the YES putters and the vertical grooves in the new TM putters. They impart the forward spin to eliminate the skidding.

The feel and balance on the Balde is just so pleasing. I can really feel the ball impact the face and roll off. I don't have the hard clicky feeling that I used to get with the YES Callie. Probably because of the carbon steel, but the Balde is just so much softer feeling. The feel reminds me of a TP Mills putter, but it has the Anser look that I'm always a sucker for.

For now at least this putter has found a home in my bag. I hope that it will stay that way for a while, but Chris has been showing me the rest of the Gauge Putter line that just has the putter ho in me going nuts. :(

Here's a few pics of my "Balde". The pictures do not do any justice for the color. Mine was a special order without the sightline. For those that prefer a sightline, I know they are available too. Chris was really great to work with and unfortunately too close for comfort. I can really see myself ho-ing a lot from him. If you contact him...tell him Reid sent you. Maybe that way he will stop trying to turn me on to new putters every week!

A little late on the reply but Chris can be contacted at tourspecgolf.com. He's "tourspecgolfer" there or here at Golfwrx, he's "qualitydaydream". Just send him a PM.

If you need anymore information, feel free to PM me. I'll be glad to help.
