The dreaded slice

I've been fighting a bad slice over the past two rounds, and because of it, have shot some really high scores. Everything either A) slices or B) slowly fades right.

Let me list some things I thought would help, but have not.

Weight shift
grip (maybe a little help with which hand should have more pressure.)
not crowding the ball at address
bending the knees

I've tried all of these things, and everytime I'll hit a fade/slice. Sometimes I'll hit a good shot, but it's rare. Could it be that I am coming over the top, or that I am too steep with my takeaway? Any ideas would be greatly appriciated. I know I can play great, but whether I have a slice or not always determines my score.

Have you ever heard of Occam's Razor? It's a saying from the 14th century that essentially states, "the simplest explanation is most often the best."

 

I hate to sound like a broken record, but have someone else check the basics:

1. Grip (slice is caused by one that's too weak)

2. Posture (too much weight on the left side can lead to a slice)

3. Alignment of feet, hips, shoulders (if any one is aimed left it can lead to a slice)

4. Position of hands at address (you may be getting them too far ahead of the ball)

 

I have no idea what 1-4 normally look like for you, but have someone who does take a look.

 

The reason WHY you slice is easy, the clubface is open at impact. The reason why the clubface is open is more difficult to detect withtout seeing you swing.

Thanks for the help. I fixed the grip, but the bigger problem was with my shoulders vs my hips/feet and where each was aimed. My feet and hips were fine, but, like you said tmfan, my shoulders were aimed left. I made sure every shot I had them in line, and I hit the ball great. I sliced the ball once today, and that was on the 2nd hole. Thanks

Awesome, glad to hear things worked themselves out! ;)

 

One thing which helped me keep things in line was keeping my swing in line at the range by hitting a mixture of draws, fades, and straight shots. That way you get to remember the sensation of playing form a closed stance, and open stance, and a square stance.
