Srixon Z-TX Driver Review

Let me preface this review by saying that I really really wanted to like this driver, even going as far as re-shafting it and getting it properly suited to my swing before I even took it out of my garage. Everything that I read about the driver was a higher spin rate then what I was used and the loft was a touch higher then I play, but I said what the heck let's try and give this a go.

 

My set-up for the course:

 

Srixon Z-TX Driver - 9.5*

Graphite Design Throttle X 45"

Golf Pride Multi-Compound w/ 3 Wraps

Wind - 15-20 SW

 

So my initial swing with this driver was, Hey that isn't that bad - I pumped one down the fairway with a little baby cut on it and ended up almost perfectly for my approach shot. My next hole was a very similar result - distance was good, not exceptional, but once again I was sitting in the fairway. My next couple of holes I started to try and lay into the shots a little bit more and see what I could do with this combo, and to hit it side by side with my J33R with Accra DyMatch S2. The results were kind of as I had predicted... the J33R was tighter and LONGER then the Srixon. When I turned into the wind, I found that this is where the Srixon failed me, I was starting to hit spinny fades that died when they were struck into the wind. The disparity on drives that I hit when I was into the wind found the Srixon to be about 15-20 yards short of where my J33 was. On shots with a cross or downwind, the Srixon was within 5 yards of my J33.

 

Feel - the Z-TX feels great through impact. I had heard that it sounded and felt like a tin-can, but my thoughts were immediately put to rest as the clubhead provided me adequate feedback as to where and how well I had struck the golf ball.

 

Looks - At address the Z-TX looks fantastic, a nice clean look without gimmicky lines or shapes. The underside of this driver is where they put the technology with the Twin-Cam Sole and the Aerodynamics. Overall this is a great looking driver.

 

Findings:

 

Unfortunately the price point of this driver being $100-$200 more then other leading drivers on the market is going to scare off some people, considering you could get a driver and a fairway wood from most manufacturers for the same price as this driver. The reasoning at Srixon behind this is that it is a higher level titanium that is used more in JDM markets then in the American market, something that I don't think that the American public is that concerned about, especially when the results are not there.

 

Is this a bad driver - no not at all, once again it is not the driver for me even when I tried to set it up to my ideal playing characteristics. The distance was eh, the launch was a little high and the spin was also higher then I would like to play. I play near the ocean and I need a driver that is going to perform in all levels, especially into the wind so that I don't lose unneccessary distance.

 

I think that Srixon has a great looking driver with the Z-TX line, I just wish that it was a little bit better performing.

Agreed. I wanted to like it too. The sound was horrible, but the head looks and feels pretty good. It definately wasn't as long as the j33r when I was gaming it. Then again I played the j33r in 5 different heads and for quite a while. The price tag of this Srixon is nuts to me. Didn't fit me either, but I'm sure it fits some people out there.

The irons are excellent though.I didn't try the ZTX driver,but last years(ZRW?) was a performer for me.
