What do I need to do to make a d1 golf team?

I'm currently going to my local community college and looking to transfer to a division one golf team. What things must I do to qualify for a d1 school?

 

As far as handicap, tournament results gpa and any other things you know I must do to make it.

Also how do I get an official GAM golf handicap?

Most people worrying about D1 don't carry a handicap, from experience. Up north you would need to shoot mid 70's and down south maybe lower. Students are sought out during their jr/sr year in high school, typically around the time of state championships. Then offered scholarships or the like to play for a D1 program. Most programs have an "open' try out but it is fiercly competitive to try and come in and join a team, especially if you aren't intending to stay 4 years (meaning you already took a chunk of college courses).

I would assume most schools require (state schools atleast, private may be different) a 2.5 gpa to remain elgible, however I know some programs have a self imposed higher standard.

I play D1 golf and from experiance to play in most D1 schools you have to shoot consistently around or under par. I am a +1.7 and dont travel (qualify for tournaments) that often. Big state schools require even better play. The smaller the school the more grades matter. Having a good GPA is key because you'll miss a lot of class if you're on a golf team and you coach wants to know that you have what i takes to get your school and golf done. To be honest sometimes playing for a smaller D2 or even D3 school can be more fun in that you'll get to play in more tournaments, unless youre the next Tiger in which case D1 is the way to go.

Have your parents donate lots of money to the school's golf team. That's how it worked 10 years ago at least.
