Is this a fair price?

I found a used Del Mar 3.5 for sale in a shop I frequent. It is pretty dinged and gouged in numerous places; in fact from the number I would guess that the previous owner never put a cover on it. I was seriously considering getting it and having it restored. The shop was asking $160 non-negoitable. That plus the cost of restoration was more than I really wanted to spend. Given the condition it was in I was hoping to get it for somewhere around $90-110.

I can't decide if I am passing up a good deal or not. Any opinions?

Pass it up. There are much better ones out there for that price. Look at my WITB pics...that one only cost me $125 and it's 9/10. PM Hacker's bag pics also has one that was easily 10/10 but only $140.

 

It's a great putter but not in that condition and at that price. To restore it at the Studio, it'll easily end up costing over $100 and the Del Mar 3.5 is not a $260 putter.

I had checked Del Mar prices on a couple of websites and I knew the Studio would cost another $100 or so and I had also concluded that $260 total was more than I wanted to spend. I just wasn't sure if offering the shop a $100 was unrealistic on my part. Also I am not looking to replace my current putter so much, as I wanted another Scotty as a backup.

 

I do have to say it is a sweet feeling putter. Thats the good thing about browsing the used club bin at some of the shops; you never know what you will find. Hopefully, I can find one in better shape or at a reasonable price someday.

There is also a limit to what the studio can do. If it is heavily gouged or dinged, they may not be able to do a perfect restoration. Superficial damage is fine, but deep stuff is a problem.

 

 

You would be amazed what they can do with a heavily dinged up putter with an aftermarket finish and a custom bent neck.

 

Mizuno...keep an eye on Ebay for them. They've been popping up more frequently lately, probably due to Phil using a similar Proto model from Odyssey. Which unfortunately if you're hunting a good one might drive the prices up but hardly near the $260 area. Good luck in your search!
