What would have caused this?

Practiced quite a bit today on my short game (over 300 balls from about 30 yards out). Toward the end i kept toeing everything with my 54 and 60 degree wedges...and i mean, going through the cart sitting off to the right.....Prior to that i was dropping them within 10 feet of the hole, consistently. What do i need to check out tomorrow when i go back?

First i'd ask yourself why did you hit so many? What were you trying to accomplish?

 

I think ball beating has certain advantages for engraining moves and getting into "golf shape."

 

However, it should always be done with a purpose. And stop when you're tired. By continuing all you're going to do is engrain sloppy mechanics. Trust me. I'm a range rat by nature, but since scaling back on the number of balls I've hit and focusing on certain goals when I practice, my swing has improved.

 

I think you just made yourself tired and got a little sloppy mechanically. Probably coming too far from the inside to out or perhaps dropping your shoulder. Difficult to tell without video. However, I imagine when you go back tomorrow you'll start dropping them within 10 feet again.

I agree, I think you just wore yourself out and things got sloppy at the end.

 

I'm one of those people who can go out and hit bucket after bucket if I'm working on something but once I get tired it goes horribly bad. At that point I take a short break and hit 5 more concentrating on making these 5 the best ones I hit that day. Then no matter how they turn out I stop. If you continue after your swing breaks down you can ingrain some bad habits quickly.

With all due respect, why were you practicing from 30 yards? When you play you should never be at that yardage unless you miscalculated a previous shot. I would rather focus on lay-up distances, maybe 80-100 yards, half wedges from 50-75, and chips from 10 yards and in. Every other yardage is a mistake and might happen once a round.
