Tool to remove them

Can someone refresh my memory as to what size star key (or whatever it's called) to remove the weights of TM woods and hybrids. I know there is a dedicated tool made by TM but I would like the cheaper alternative. Many thanks.

I think you're referring to an Allan key which is hexagonal in shape. I'm pretty sure only TM makes the tool to get the weights out unless you make one yourself.

Just take your club with you to your local hardware store and find the correct tool. Seems to me that would be the easiest way to find out the correct size.

The TM weights are a T-25 Torx head. You should be able to find Torx drivers and bits at any hardware store (they are common on automotive applications these days), but you really will want to make sure you have a torque wrench too (sorry, I don't know what the torque spec is). If you don't already have a torque wrench, it will be cheaper to buy the TM wrench.

I bought the r7 tp 2w and the rescue dual tp 16* with no taylormade wrench tool. I didn't want to waste the money when I knew the wrench was coming with my custom ordered driver (that has yet to arrive). I don't know what number driver it is, but it is deffinately the same head pattern as a torx/star driver. I just tried several of my torx driver bits for my hand held screwdriver/nutdriver and it works fine. When I took the screws out for the first time, they were really tight for just a torx screwdriver. I had to crank them out, so I am figuring the torque setting on the factory wrench has got to be pretty high. I don't think it is rocket science. I just tighten them with low-medium pressure and check them regulary so that they haven't worked themselves loose.

I certainly agree that there's nothing particularly special about the screws or wrench, other than it being optimized for the desired torque, whatever it's supposed to be. Most hardware stores will have torx screwdrivers, but the small handle will make it very difficult to get up to the proper torque that the little palm-sized TM wrench can attain. You can also get torx bits that you could use with a ratchet wrench, but now you have the opposite problem - a 9" long ratchet can easily apply much more torque than the sockets were designed for and you could damage a weight or socket.

 

Finding the proper torque spec and using an accurate torque wrench will make this easy, if you've got the gear. I think tightening things up firmly or installing the weights with Loctite will work fine, but there's a lot of impact happening in the head, so I would think it would be pretty easy for the weights to work loose if under-tightened and you wouldn't want to lose that.
