Help fixing my iron land angle

Recommended Posts

Hey folks,

I'll try and keep this short: got refit for new shafts in my OG T200s and have seen some things that give me pause. Well respected fitter put me into X100s and 7i swing speed is 90mph.

I have been noticing the ball flight has come down quite a bit with all clubs, and my 5i (longest iron) flight is much flatter than I'd like to see. Was on a trackman today and well struck 5 irons were coming in at 39° land angle.

For reference, my well struck 7 irons were coming in at about 45°. Ball flights look the same as when I got fit, but hitting only 7i doesn't give you the full picture.

Aside from starting the fitting process over again and spending a lot more money, is there anything I can do? Set is GW - 5i

Thanks

My first instinct would be to add some loft.  Barring that buy some new long iron shafts and soft step x2.

Yeah that was a thought I had as well.

It seems like GW-7i are acceptable. It's the 6i and 5i that have become the issue.

I'll have to look a bit closer at the carry distances, but I think there may be some room to play with weakening lofts a bit. I've noticed that the gap between 7i and 8i is larger than I'd like (15-20 yards), so perhaps weakening 7i, 6i, and 5i would work.

For soft stepping, that would involve moving shafts around with different heads, right?

You could try replacing the long iron shafts with AMT White X100's, but you might notice the slight weight drop in the jump to the AMT.

Exactly, you pull all the heads and rebuild by moving the shafts down and cutting to length.  You could also just soft step the long irons.

Hmm, I hadn't considered that. I assume the AMT white version would launch a bit higher than the standard Dynamic Gold X100s?

From my experience, yes, in the long irons, The 9i/PW shaft is exactly the same as standard X100. Long irons are lighter, and for most people, launch a little higher.

Given that the difference in static loft between your 7 and 5 irons is 6 degrees, it shouldn’t come as a great surprise that your landing angle changes by 6 degrees as well.

Fitting high swing speed players into player’s distance oriented clubs with boosted lofts will normally produce this type of result, as the fitter is trying to provide a good degree of forgiveness without resorting to mega-size SGI types. Consider a set of i210/230’s.

Drastically different. My previous set were Project X LZ 5.5 with same T200 heads (standard swing weight, 2° flat), but those were fit years ago and my swing was much worse.

Fitter suggested simply changing the shafts to DG X100 because the irons were in great shape.

The previous shafts in these irons produced much steeper land angles and peak heights across the board.
