Square head driver wars?

Exactly...This battle will be something to watch, but something tells me that Nike and AO own the patent on breadth to width ration to change the geometry. My feeling is if Callaway has a way to make a Square driver that works with a Higher MOI why would they not have this ready to go. I think conceptually they have something but from previous drivers the Composite Back Peice did not perform well or sound very good. The Whole Geometry aspect of MOI is something Tom Stites owns right now and the benefit of a Higher MOI will be something people will have to figure out without infringing on any Patents used by the SQ and SUMO. Cleveland could not get the driver to play larger in terms of MOI than the HI-Bore because they can not lengthen the Breadth(sole) of the Driver to deepen CG.

I have not seen any patents that broad regarding breadth to width ratio. A former design Stites made while at Impact Golf Technologies had a .99% breadth to width ratio, but the design, material and manufacturing IP was sold to Dogleg Right (HOG Golf) before he went to work full time for Nike. Note the SQ is advertised as slightly less at .98% I believe.

 

There could be more limited patents that include square backs, but there were squarish drivers before, including old wooden heads that were square in the back. The combination (breadth to width, ring, squared corners, dished crown, etc.) may be patentable, but again, in a more limited sense, as all these could possibly be obvious to combine, and therefore not patentable....

 

Clearly Callaway has numerous issued design patents on the record (which are pretty wild in geometry), as well as published utility patent applications which, if allowable, will likely provide their own protection in their segment with their particular methods and apparatii. I expect we will see their square products, and their performance numbers soon. Callaway also has a long reputation for holding secrets tightly behind closed doors until launch.

 

For many, many years, it used to be the industry would have to wait until the first morning of the PGA Show in Orlando to see the new launches. Now with fall sales meetings, reps get the new stuff and immediately start showing accounts, as we see above (and now spread all over the world in nan-seconds thru great sites like Golfwrx!). These fall soft launches makes it much easier for manufacturers and accounts to plan, but it does make it a long wait to see these products start to ship next spring (although I see Ping is selling its Raptures immediately getting a head start on the field).

 

Times are a changing with new technology, and so are the shapes of drivers!
