Want to know what I'm doing right in my swing.

Recommended Posts

Vid posted,
Just randomly thought of posting my swing up on the wrx to learn more about my golf swing and what I'm doing right in it. Though in regards to fundamentals, can always improve on that, unfortunately all I have is down the line at the moment.

On a side note, would spin be the cause on why my ball has more "shape" to it on my short irons as opposed to my long irons?

Way too long a backswing.Your arms seem to be moving considerably after your shoulder turn is complete. This is contributing to your loss of posture and a hip stall on the downswing Please post a front view

+1

I was going to put the EXACT same thing. Get your arms to stop when your shoulders stop, body will be more in-sync. I'd also work on getting your wrist's set 'slightly' earlier in the backswing. All in all a pretty solid move.

Lots of Callaway Stuff

Good motion, I think you could change one thing that would tighten things up considerably and keep your arms from running off too much.

Look at the way your upper right arm gets away from your body at the top of the backswing. I have/had the same problem and when that arm gets too far behind the body it prevents the arm from folding up/setting the club, the right shoulder essentially does a shrug to complete the backswing, it really cranks behind the body.

This prevents the body from tilting more towards the ball, which would in turn create space for the arms and club to work from the 'inside'. The stand up move is because of that lack of forward tilt, and the right elbow is trying to occupy the space where the right hip is.

So, think more about external rotation of the shoulder. Get into a golf posture w/o a club, make a backswing with just your right arm, and imagine that you were dealing a card over your right shoulder; where your hand and forearm are doing most of the motion and the upper arm and shoulder are staying relatively still. I like sticking a tee in my R armpit (more toward your back, not your chest, important difference) and swinging to finish w/o letting it fall.

The first one is me from 4 months ago, look at how deep the arms go, the right shoulder, how the arms run off, and the stand-up. Its better now

The second one his, well, you know. Look how opposite to me he looks lol

Good luck

You seem to have good leverage through the ball. You keep the hands going instead of flipping the clubhead down the line. That's a very good thing, IMO.

I agree about the other comments here. If you set the wrists earlier and rotate the forearms more throughout the back swing it will be easier to stop the arms swing together with the shoulder turn.

Thanks for the insight I appreciate it, I'm working on a lot of things at the moment right now and will take all your advice into consideration. I was mostly just trying to figure what I am currently doing right in my swing so I can understand it a little bit more. Unfortunately it will be a while before I can get a face-on swing posted. In regards to set-up is there anything that you currently see that I could improve on?

I would agree with the others who said too much arm swing. IMO, it looks like there is an attempt to widen the arc too much instead of keeping the width of hands and chest fairly constant.

All "tips" are welcome. Instruction not desired.

Thanks once again for the feedback, mikpga thanks for answering my question glad to know that I'm still doing a good job of maintaining my balance throughout the swing and rotating through.

Lefthook, Unfortunately since I do not own a video camera I wont be able to post a face- on view of my swing until I win my next Moonlight Golf event and do not have one scheduled for the next couple of weeks. Though thanks for letting me know that I'm still maintaining my leverage even though I'm working hard on maintaing the posture throughout the downswing.

The setup looks very good to me. And both sequences shows a lot of athletism.

However, face on, there are clear signs of releasing the club too early. Video shows that the clubshaft lean has caught up with left arm lean before impact and overtaken it after impact so I assume you have a negative lag pressure (in your left hand) through impact. Face on also shows that the release starts a bit earlier than desirable. You probably have a good lag pressure from your right arm through impact. That is a good thing but not good enough.

Your hands are too late in the down swing compared to your shoulder turn. It is almost like you run out of shoulder rotation before impact and you stand almost straight up towards impact to add some more upward pulling. Your head is coming up to early. If anything it should be chasing downwards for quite some time more before you started pulling up.

From hip height to hip height, your hands are lagging too much behind your shoulders. This prevents you from maximising the leverage from your shoulder turn. It is also the main cause of the early release. You need to get your hands down under you earlier in the down swing. Or perhaps, dont bring them as far back in the back swing. That will give the sholders more leverage, make it easier to hold the clubhead lag longer and probably increse the force and swing speed through impact.

There are angles between the left shoulder and the left arm that will make you feel that you're pulling something heavy and there are angles that will make you feel like you're pulling something less heavy. Chase the heavy feel while you practice strokes with very short back swing. You will be surprised how much power you can generate with a short back swing when you find the geometry that maximises the leverage of your shoulder turn.

I think the comments you were given that your arms swing went to far in the back swing is valid.

thanks for the feed back, any motion drills I could do to incorporate that?
[/quote]

I think the Faldo drill should help.

Also "normal" 9-3 or 9-finish drills with a short back swing.

You can also reherse a snap release. Hold the wrist coccked until you right elbow has passed the line of sight to the ball.
