One etiquette question

We were on the course today and we were kind of slow since one of my friend was a high handicapper. On a par 3 hole, guys behind us arrogantly asked us whether they could play ahead of us. Since our balls are all over the green, we refused and told him that we would let the guys go on the next coming hole. After that hole, one of the guys came to me and told me that players usually change turns on par 3 holes and that is why he wanted to go in front of us.
In fact, I don't know if the guy is correct on that or not. It would make sense to me if we didn't hit the ball yet when he asked. But, as I said, our balls were on the green. Let's say they hit the ball right after us. What if my ball is on the putting line of the guy's ball?

Please, clarify me on the issue.

Sounds as if they were trying to hoodwink you into letting them play through. If they were close enough to be talking to you while you guys were on the tee maybe you should've let them play through if there was room out in front. Simp

I've let people play through and played through others on all types of holes, not just par 3s...

 

If your ball was in their putting line, they should just mark it for you, putt out, and then replace your ball.

If someone is asking to play through, then you should let them. They may have been a bit arrogant but, you said you were playing slow. Slow play is the bane of golf. If the group behind you is faster and there is room ahead, let them go. Basic etiquette demands you let them through no matter where.

I wasn't there, so I cannot assess whether they were being arrogant. However, in my experience Par 3s are the most common place to let a faster group play through. You can hit your tee shots and either: (a) wait on the tee for the other group, then go to the green with them and mark your balls; or (b) proceed to the green, mark your balls and get out of their way. The group playing through will typically putt really quickly (conveniently giving themselves 8 footers in the interest of courtesy ) and while they rush to the next hole to tee off, you can leisurely replace your balls and putt out. Logically, there's no difference between this approach and letting somebody play through after hitting your approach on a par 4 or 5, but for some reason doing it on a Par 3 seems to minimize the effect of trading places on the course.

I concur. I have been let through many times on a Par 3's after they hit. I hurry to the green while they stroll there and I try to be off the green by the time they get there.

 

Any hole is appropriate and you can tee off before you let them through.

It is senseless to make yourself hurry and try to keep up rather than just let people through. It makes it much more enjoyable, and if the 5 minutes that it will take for them to pass is too much, you are playing the wrong game!
