No, no, I think that DMK is right.

When you already have the answer you're looking for, I find that it's best not to include any information which might cloud the issue. Some people might look across a larger number of players, since nearly the entire Titleist staff has switched over from the 983K/E. But focusing only on Ernie somehow seems more scientific to me. And the fact that he underwent major ACL reconstruction and 6 months of physcial therapy in 2005, following his boating accident . . . I don't see how that could account for a loss of 5 yards.

It's a provlen fact. The 983K is the longest drier ever made for Titleist!!!!!!!!!!!!!

On the other hand, and pardon me for playing Devil's Advocate, why did his driving distance decline 5.3 yards from 2003 to 2004, while still using the same 983K? That's the same decline as from 2004 to 2006. It's almost as if there might be factors in play other than his driver. And yes, we're now receiving some unconfirmed reports that some of the other players have actually increased their yardage over the past couple of years. I know I hit my 905R a lot further than my old 983K, due to the bigger sweet spot and lower spin (yes, the 983K is higher-spinning). Go figure!

i'm pretty sure driving distance is the average of a player's tee shot distance. so, you can't just assume the 983 is the "longest titleist driver ever". i've read interviews that feature ernie and he has stated that he wants to play courses with shot making and placing like he did in the 90's when he won his two majors, not overpowering the course. it's totally possible that ernie is hitting a lot more 3-woods or irons off the tee which would lower his average driving distance. even if he wasn't hitting as many drivers, after his surgery he still isn't back at 100% which would also lower his driving distance. btw, no offense but the comments about "does that mean the 983 is the longest titleist driver ever" sounds like something an uninformed noob would post.

Goodness we even have orthapedic specialists on this site to tell us about how long it takes to recover from knee surgery. Figures lie and liars figure (a credo used by my father in law when the sample size was ridiculously insignificant-----he was also the president of the ASQ formerly ASQC)

postamble();sandy,

Guess you missed my point. I was just giving DMK a hard time for drawing his conclusion from a sample of one, where the law of statistics wouldn't apply. Sorry if my sarcastic humor was too subtle.

Small world. I'm also an active member of ASQ, due to my job. Wonder if you're talking about Mr. Mairani. If so, I'm sure he'd agree with everything you wrote, except for the spelling error (being so focused on quality and all).

And, while I'm not an orthopedic surgeon, I did read a detailed article about Ernie's ACL reconstruction a few months ago in Golf Digest. It was of interest to me because I underwent an ACL/MCL reconstruction myself (without benefit of the on-site private physical therapist that Ernie had). So I know first-hand that it could, in fact, have an impact on a golf swing.

But after all that, we still don't know if the 983K is the best driver ever. Go figure!!!!
