Starting over again at 63

Recommended Posts

I have been playing 30 years and was never really that good, but love the game. Have been playing Powerbilt's my whole life. I just had open heart surgery in Feb this year and am getting the itch to get out. Still have some crunching noises in the chest, but want to get back at it.

I feel physically like I am starting over and will probably only be able to have a three quarters swing with slower speed from here on out. I am looking for advice on what set of clubs I should be looking for to get back on the course again in a couple of weeks.

They dont have to be a new set, but one in which is very forgiving and good launch angle. I read somewhere, that with a shorter back swing, a more upright lie might be needed??? I was playing standard loft and lie.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks to all,

Frank

Good to see you are wanting to get back into golf. Don't underestimate where you wil be in 12 months I play with a couple of gents who have undergone open heart and they now hit the ball as hard as ever. Notwithstanding I would be looking for a golf outlet where I can try a few shafts. I guess if tentative at first graphite shafts in a senior flex would be a good start.I would be looking at hybrids instead of long irons but not spending to much just yet. Good luck

One thing... don't let the graphite shafts entice you because of lower weight.
I have a set of Ping G-10's with graphite shafts. Very nice clubs. I then bought a set of Maltby forged irons with steel shafts. THEY WAY EXACTLY THE SAME IN WEIGHT.

The Pings have a heavier head weight feel because of the lighter shafts. The Maltbys have a lighter head weight feel because of the heavier shafts. Obviously try anything but many pros have told me to always get steel shafts unless you can barely lift a club. Not sure if I agree with that statement. I have been using my Maltbys for over a year; but my 7 iron broke and had to use my Ping 7 iron. I was in the rough and really liked the way the heavier head weight went through the grass. No grabbing at all.

I'm probably confusing you even more. Just trying to give some "heads-up" advice.
Good luck. Glad to hear you coming back.

I'm 69 and play Ping G10 clubs with graphite shafts. Best set of clubs I can think of for a Senior. They get the ball up very easily. As to age and physical issues, I play with single digit guys much older than you who have had serious medical issues. Bottom line.....With the correct attitude, you have many years of golf ahead of you. BTW, as you probably know, used Ping clubs can be hard to find, but not impossible. G5, G10, G15, any one of those are great, especially for a Senior. Good Luck! :good:

First, ....Welcome Home Bro! I spent some time in Vietnam/3Corps AO, with the Army.
I still play the old Ping Eye2 irons as my favorite, but you might try different new ones and get fitted for them. Plenty of options and good advice on this forum.
