1) - Uneven Tee Boxes. I hate putting the ball into play from a downhill, sidehill lie.

2) - Broken sprinklers. I hate casual water when it hasn't rained in a month.

3) - Aerated greens. I hate rolling my rock through other rocks.

4) - Maintenance crews who are obviously to the golfers on the course. A little respect to those that keep them employed.

5) - Rock hard sand traps. If I wanted to play on concrete, I would have played in the parking lot.

As far as design and layout-par 3's that are 200+ yards cause I struggle with my long irons and I'm to stubborn to get a hybrid even though it would help a lot

Theres a hole on my home course where the fairway slopes severely downhill from left to right....................if I do manage to hit a good drive the ball will roll all the way down the slope into the rough, which is better than the ball hanging up in the fairway where the ball is well below my feet for my approach shot. No reward, actually penalized, for hitting a drive down the middle..................

This might be a bit off the spirit of the topic, but my biggest pet peeve has to be watching tour players exit a bunker by walking up the face of it. They do it all the time. I know the caddies are going to rake it properly, but at one time this was considered poor etiquette. Our new players in the game are learning poor habits from players they look up to.

I'm guess I'm generally pretty agreeable on course design. In my mind every one is playing the same course, so it isn't inherently unfair and there isn't a whole lot that a designer can do to bug me. I don't mind blind shots or uneven tee boxes or anything like that.

The only thing that really bugs me are when courses are designed in a way that inherently slows down play. Massive spaces between tee and green, landing areas that are too close together for parallel holes meaning that you will invariably have to wait for someone to get out of your hole or you're in danger of being hit by someone on another hole, and to a lesser extent shared tee boxes.

Beyond that, there isn't much I don't like. I'm not really a fan of courses that do the 6/6/6 breakdown for par 3/4/5 but I understand the desire to break up the general monotony of most courses. It's a nice idea, but it ends up turning the round into a death march.

Uneven tee boxes would have to be my main complaint. At my home course there are two holes that each have really random OB markers, and it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. That's gotta be another.

Not really design but more general pin placement and tee box maintenance. For whatever reason they neglect to mow or care for the tips when they aren't connected to the regular mens tee. I don't like teeing up from the rough with leaves everywhere (only on public/semi courses). Next is putting the pin on slopes within a couple paces of the edge since they fail to maintain their greens properly and have to place it in these spots where it is not trampled/worn.

When all the par 4's (or 3's or 5's) play with little variation in distance. For example, Red Lodge Golf in Red Lodge, MT - these are the yardages for the par 4's:

I am VERY surprised no one has said this but my #1 pet peeve is when people dont rake the bunkers! And I mean rake them properly! [b] I cant stand this at all...... This thread asked what peops "Pet Peeves" were and when someone is disrespectful and doesnt rake a bunker properly and i have to pay for it.... that to me, is not what the game is about.

If someone could get an advantage from the groups behind them for not rakin the bunker properly, im sure some people wouldnt rake....

looks like talking about 'etiquette' and pet peeves dont mix w this crowd.....

well, i dont know..... but i personally wouldnt mind playing courses each week that are perfectly maintained and at their yearly 'peak' each week a tournament goes through.

I played redstone after the Shell Open and it was much better than the rest of the year. Not that it is bad the rest of the year but def at the 'peak'...

these fairways these pros play off are perfect.... they rarely play a course that is less than "ideal"

yeah, they play tough pins/rough and tighten the fairways but the overall condition is bar none

It is entirely unrealistic to have expectations that golf courses should be maintained and presented in the manner they are prepared for pga tour golf. That does not even begin to resemble real golf. It's TV entertainment.

so pga golf is entertainment and not real golf? fair enough..... i dont have that expectation but i do think playing maintained courses like the pga is ideal to score well and makes them easier.

A lot of people see golf on TV and want the same. It costs a lot of money to put a course in that type of condition and contrary to what you believe, too much green actually diminishes the golf experience.

If your expectation of golf is for some artificially perfect condition for each and every shot, then perhaps golf is not the game for you. Golf is played outdoors in a variety of conditions. It's not meant to be an indoor game with perfectly controlled surfaces. It can't be.
