Public courses

Has anyone played Bison Golf Club or Silver Creek Golf Club in Show Low? I know they aren't as nice as Torreon, obviously, but I was thinking of going up there one weekend before summer is up and trying them out. Just looking for some feedback or pics of the courses. Thanks

SIlvercreek is an interesting Gary Panks design that makes good use of the lay of the land. The area north of Show Low is mostly open, the vegetation is more of the scrubby pinyon/juniper type with lots of native grasses flanking the turf areas. (if you are imagining a ponderosa pine forest, you may be disappointed). Minimal housing intrusion. While not a plush course, the conditioning is adequate and the greens are very good. Worth a visit.

Bison - don't bother. Seriously. The original nine is short and not awful but mostly uninteresting. A second nine was tacked on, routed through housing, with what may be the narrowest playing corridors i've ever seen, most are 30 yards or less!! (not 30 yard fairways, 30 yards from OB to OB! Surely a homebuilt layout by someone who new little of golf course design. yuck

There is another public up the road called Pinetop Lakes. An executive layout (4500 yards par 63) that is not a must play, but it has some good holes and is set in a scenic Pondersoa forest. Routed through housing but not cramped or intrusive. Seems much cooler there than Show Low. I would play this one over Bison any day.

Thanks for the head's up on Bison - I think our weekend trip is going to be in Flagstaff anyways. I'm hoping to finally make it up to Elephant Rocks and see if Flagstaff Ranch will let us out on the weekend since they're advertising limited public play.
