Philadelphia Country Clubs: Best Value

Not ready for the big boys yet

Hi all. I'm looking to venture out of public golf, but I can't really find a private course that suits my needs. I live in the main line area (right near Overbrook CC), but can't justify paying the high dues/fees at places like Overbrook, Radnor Valley, and obviously Merion/Aronimink/Philly CC.

Are there any hidden gems out there? I have played Edgmont a few times and I like it but I'm not sure if I like it enough to play that course 30 times a year. A buddy of mine is a member at Plymouth CC but he doesn't play golf, so I'm not sure about the course, although it isn't priced to high.

Any thoughts are welcome. Thanks in advance!

Depends what you are looking for in a club, just golf or all the bells and whistles. Also what your normal travel route is because there are some clubs that are not far that are more likely to be cutting deals. Do a Google earth search for golf clubs in your area and just keep expanding the area and you will be shocked about all the options.

Blue Bell CC is a very nice deal, but not sure if that's a bit too far for you. Plymouth is nice, small greens for the most part that don't undulate too much, though very well kept. Not short nor long at 6,500 or 6,600 yards (don't really remember) but the holes play pretty oddly with how they decided on lengths for the layout. 10 is like 300 yards from the tips and straight, so it is a driveable hole. Gotta watch out for the traps in front though, they can get you. In general, I think the traps there are laid out very well.

The clubhouse itself is nice inside and the course is well taken care of, the only real downside to me is like I said smallish simple greens, but it's a nice layout and if you are looking for value that's probably one of the better ones in the area.

If you call the clubhouse during the week and they don't have too many out, you can get on for around ~$60ish, or at least you could last year. Might be an option if you want to check it out first before taking the plunge.

I played Twin Pond with my cousin who is just starting out. Really not a terrible place to go golfing. Its cheap ($27 on Thurs before 2) and maintained nicely. It only lacks in difficulty for the challenging golfer. I thought it was quite tough when I played. I can't remember the yardages but I know some of the tips were pushed way back. I would definitely go there if you are in the northwest suburbs of Philly.
