Since I am not allowed to speculate on who the next 'Jesus' is - I would like to change my topic.

 

The next [non-denominational] figure head, of worship.

 

 

I don't know about the rest of you - it seems to me that when someone under the age of 35 wins a tournament, specifically a major, EVERY single [expletive] website, interview, and sports channel just asks the same question. Will this be the next Tiger Woods? They did it with Rory, they did it with Keegan this weekend...

 

 

I get really annoyed when that's all they want to talk about. Tiger is a great player, when he's actually competing, and so are these other guys who take home the billboard sized checks each week. Let these guys live in their moment without driving all of these, "How many majors will Rory win, 5, 10, 15???" Let's wait for him to win his second before you start monogramming his pillows with "Greatest golfer who ever stepped a foot on this somewhat-green earth."

At least Keegan and Rory won a major, still waiting for Rickie Fowler to win his first tournament period. But hey the kid is making millions selling flat brimmed Puma hats so cut him some slack.

Seriously this same thing happened during the 70's and 80's, the "next Nicklaus" tag got put on a plethora of players from Weiskopf, Sutton, Pate, Crenshaw, Norman, etc. etc. Finally a few guys from Europe did some damage like Faldo and Seve, but only Watson came close till Tiger came along.

The next Tiger Woods is still in diapers IMO, some of the current crop may win 3-4 majors before they are done but none will win at the level Tiger did, none of them have the whole package. Look for someone who hits it long, is mentally tough and is used to winning at an early age and [b]can make putts under pressure time and time again[/b]. I don't see that person on the tour yet.


The media is just trying to build some excitement to get the ratings up so when they re-negotiate the TV contracts there will be more money to go around.

Well the media machine must be fed. An entire channel devoted to golf, magazines, etc... they need something to fill up space.

Most real golf fans probably ignore it as they know there is a ton of talent on tour and every week is a crap shoot as to who will win...

I also don't really buy the whole "Young Guns" vs. "Old Guard" nonsense. I always laugh when they struggle to decide which "team" a 32yo should be lumped into.

When Rory stops missing four 3 foot putts per tournament, gets rid of JP for someone who will talk sense to him when it matters, and keep him totally focussed, it will be him
