Ribbed Grips

Recommended Posts

When Did They Become Popular?
I absolutely love ribbed grips. I know they've been around for a long time, Hogan apparently used massive ribs. But, when did they become an 'option'? As I understand it, Hogan built his with rope, they weren't a part of the actual grip.

I have the MacGregor Kaplan book, and a buyer has long had a choice between a leather or a corded rubber grip, but as far as I know both were round. So, when did ribbed come on the scene as a 'normal' option? Could you have special ordered a ribbed grip, say in the 50s?

I really love the old leather grips, but they're hard to find in ribbed, and I have trouble using round ones.

Thanks guys!

I like ribbed (and always have) grips as long as the rib is in
the right place on the shaft!

Ribbed grips go way back, my 1932 Spalding Kro-Flite (Cushion-Neck)
Robt. T. Jones Jr. irons have a very pronounced rib.

I highly doubt Hogan used rope, it would be unplayable, I have put
thin wire under old leather grips and it creates a rib much more than
you would think.

Thanks for the info Bella.
I've built a lot of ribs, and I think rope would work just fine, provided the gauge was the right size. I've found that copper wire works best for me.

I'd really love to get an old set of persimmons with stiff shafts and leather ribbed grips with both the shafts and grips in great shape. I'll have to start looking at Powerbilts.

I'm guessing the reference to rope probably means a thick string or cord of some kind.......I have done lots of leather grips over the years using "Butchers cord" as the build up for a rib......stretch the cord tight along the shaft then apply grip tape...slide on the under listing then the leather is wrapped on. Works very well and feels much like a normal rubber rib grip.

That's very much what I'm guessing as well. I use copper wire, but I can see where rope or cord would work great too.

Do you still build those leather grips? Can you get underlistings with a rib, or do you have to build it yourself?

Haven't done any recently...never did see ribber under listings...always just built them up to what the customer wanted.

That's kind of what I imagined as I haven't seen ribs as an option in the old catalogs. Do you still have the supplies for leather grips? If not, when do they go out of favor? What was the last maker or grips/underlistings? Lamkin? Neuman?

RM Golf & astamm8:

Yes - for some reason when astamm8 referred to rope in the original
post I imagined that it was thicker rope. I can see that very thin rope
would work just fine. It would probably be easier to work with than wire
too. I have always used thin wire though.

Several companies still sell leather grips, I don't know if they sell
the component parts seperately.

You can always pull off the grip/underlisting from an old club and wrap
your own leather grip. Didn't the old "original" Winn grips from the late
1980s to early 1990s have a rubber underlisting with the grip wrapped on?

I don't stock any of this stuff anymore....haven't done so for years. The last set I did was a couple of years ago and the customer brought all the bits with him...from his private stash. I did the install and "Ribbed" them for him...........memory tells me that they were Lamkins....nice dark chestnut colored ones.

These days all I do is work for Miura and they don't seem to have anyone wanting wrapped leather grips:rolleyes:
