Multipurpose GPS

I have a LRF and Golfshoton m iPhone. I love and use both while playing but the Golfshot is a great app made mediocre by a not so great apple GPS.

 

My wife wants a portable navigation system for the car and I thought maybe there is a gps that can be used for golf and navigation since they use the same tech. Apparently Expresso Golf was the only unit that figured this out, but reviews arent so convincing.

 

Is there another unit that provides the same service? Is there a way to hack into a golf gps to include navigation or vice versa?

 

I could keep using my phone but if I can get a device with gps dedicated technology that is more reliable, I'd rather get a 2 in 1 device.

Dedicated automotive systems can be had for less than $100 these days. For not much more than the less than stellar reviewed Expresso device, I would get a Garmin or Magellan and just leave it in the car, AND a golf dedicated GPS.

This way if you're playing while the wife is getting lost, there's no controversy.

these days, dedicated car systems are pretty much obsolete if you have a smartphone... the phone will prob have more up to date maps too, thanks to frequent updates. that said, expresso is the only 2-in-1 I've ever seen

I've got an Iphone 4 and a Magellan.

 

IMO, For auto navigation purposes, the Magellan blows the Iphone away. Bigger screen, much better navigation options, way better voice instructions/volume controls, much quicker "go to" options, traffic advisories, map updates, not to mention the semi permanent mount.

 

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my phone, but some things are better left as dedicated devices. Example: While I can (and do) search the web on my phone, I really prefer to do so on a pc....

 

Besides, I navigate and yack on the phone many miles at a time...

 

In a pinch, or for occasional use, the phone will certainly do the job, but not nearly as well as my Magellan.

 

Obsolete? Nah....
