Golf around Quantico, VA

Uncle Sam has deemed it necessary for me to get stuck in MCB Quantico, VA so I'm looking for some good courses in the area. Do the courses close during the winter months or are they open year around? Any insight is appreciated.

I haven't played it in a few years, but Augustine in Stafford VA is less than 30 min from Quantico and was an excellent course

The course on Quantico is just barely decent and I have only played there once. Forest Greens is a county course just outside Quantico that is 100% better & basically charges the same prices.

Courses are normally open year round in the Quantico area besides the days we get snow.

Augustine in Stafford, VA was bought out last year & just reopened October 2011. I have not played it since it reopened.

Also, if you prefer to walk then your best bet is to stick to Quantico or Fort Belvoir (2 - 18 hole courses). The courses off base really are not setup for walking plus they all include cart fee in the price.

Drive up the road to Laurel Hill in Lorton, VA. Tough as you want it to be from the tips, or more playable from the white tees.

Forest Greens is a very playable course, and they typically keep their greens in great shape. They roll well, hold a line and yet are generally receptive to approach shots struck well.

Acutually I just played Laurel Hill on Thursday. It is a very nice course...almost links style. I normally only play thre around once a year. The $75-100 green fees keep me away.

Old Hickory in Woodbridge is anotehr nice course except for twoo many house. For me, the best course around is Cannon Ridge in Fredricksburg.

Lee's Hill & the Gaudlet in Fredriskburg are nice plays too.

FT Belvoir golf club is good. That is my home course. The greens are in some what good condition. I played there last week and a couple of greens had a lot of ball marks. It just rained and there was a tourny in the morning. But not bad. It looks like they are trying to get a 1st cut of rough, but its horriable. Looks like crap grass. Greenside bunkers barely have lips if any. Its a challenge because the only flat ground on the course is the tee boxes. If you walk, be prepared for some steep inclines. But all in all. One of the better military courses I have played on. Andrews AFB has 3 courses but haven't made it out to that place yet.
