Garmin Foretrex Series

I'm thinking of writing my own we application which will analyze my shots entered from a gps device. The device won't do much except log waypoints, so I'm looking for something light and easy to use. I was looking at the Garmin Foretrex series as they are cheap, small, and hold lots of waypoints. My question is about their legality. I'm not sure I completely understand the USGAs rulings on gps device and smart phones, so hopefully someone can clarify for me. The Garmin 401 has a couple features the 301 doesn't, including a barometric altimeter, and an electronic compass. Does the addition of the compass, even if I'm never going to look at the device except to enter waypoints, make it illegal? If so, would a device without the compass be ok (the 301)?

Bottom line, any gadget with features that could possibly be used to help you determine anything but linear distance (altimeter, compass, wind gauge, level, etc.) are illegal. Just having them installed is a no-no, even if you turn them off or promise not to use them.

That being said, if your main intent is to track and analyze data about your shots from round to round, I would say go ahead and use it in your casual rounds but not in any tournaments/competitions.
