Looking for places to play in Atlanta...

Thinking about driving down to Atlanta for a few days in March just to get out of Charlotte and to check out the Picasso to Warhol exhibit at the High Museum. I've never golfed in the Atlanta area so I thought I might take my clubs since I don't have an agenda to keep (other than the High Museum) and the wife is staying at home. Anyone have some suggestions? Price isn't much of a factor as long as it is worth it. I'm staying at the Westin Buckhead but will have my car so I can drive to wherever.

Atlanta is tough for public golf, there is not much near the city. The better public courses tend to be about 30+ minutes from where you are staying.

Not sure what you've read or what you're expecting in terms of quality. I'm assuming you're not referring to the muni tracks in the metro area. Most of the below are in the $50-$90 range and probably the top tier for public courses. Some require slightly more than :30 from Buckhead. Most depend on the particular day you're playing as to whether it's a 4.5 hour round or 5+ (I've noticed the Frog is particularly painful on weekends now). In no particular order:

Wolf Creek
The Frog
Cobblestone
Trophy Club of Atlanta
Echelon
Woodmont
Chestatee (throw Achasta in as well if you're going this far north)
Coweta Club
Crystal Lakes

thanks for the list. i will check them out. I'll be there sunday march 4 to wednesday march 7 more than likely so maybe they won't be too bad during the week.

I grew up south of Atlanta, my first job was working at a course. Some good ones are Cannongate and Spivey, slightly less expensive but still nice.

I was in Buckhead last fall, and played a couple of courses. I think one was Eagle's Brooke. The course itself was OK, but with no GPS, no course layout on the card it was pretty unfair. Also, if you're hungry don't expect hot food. The serve hot dogs, except for the day we played as they ran out the nigft before. If you want something close to the Westin and dirt cheap try Bobby Jones. Only about 15 mins away and easily, for guys I just met, the nicest group of guys I ever played with. It's public, nothing fancy, but I like it.

I've checked out some of the courses mentioned and I think I will just leave my clubs at home. Thanks though.
