A question for the fashion forward

Here's a good style question that I've pondered. Conventional style wisdom says that it is taboo to whear white after Labor Day or before Memorial day (i.e. white shoes, white belts, etc.). Now, does this same fashion rule apply to the golf course. For example, is it taboo for a golfer, for instance, to wear white shoes and a white belt with say grey slacks and a black shirt? Come on, lets hear it from some of the fashion gurus out there. :drinks:

I'm not an expert, but I think the white after Labor day thing is outdated and applies to jackets and tops. White golf shoes are slick all year. I wear them all the time and knowing that, you can be sure you won't be the only one doing this.

That's what I'm thinking! I live in the deep south, so some of those outdated philosiphies still carry some weight, but I don't think there's anything better looking then a "fresh" and "clean" pair of white golf spikes, no matter what time of year it is.

I have no idea about the shoe question. I mean, except for a golf course, where can a guy get away with wearing white shoes even before Labor Day.

With designer fashion rapidly making headway into men's golf, some guys I know ended up discussing the following question:

 

Traditional fashion rules say that wearing white after Labor Day is not appropriate. Does that same rule apply to men and to the golf course? For example, is it uncouth for a man to wear white golf shoes and/or a white belt with traditional fall colors (grey, black, browns, etc.) after Labor Day?

 

Personally, I wear black and brown golf shoes to avoid exactly this kind of potential fashion faux paux (that's my story and I'm sticking to it), but I am curious to know the answer.

Personally I think white golf shoes are a terrible choice. Most of my golf is played with clients and requires business casual dress (i.e. dress slacks and a button down or polo shirt). I have three pairs of golf shoes (black, black, and brown) and always match them to my slacks. For navy, grey, charcoal, black slacks I always go with black shoes and for khacki, brown or olive slacks I go with the brown shoes. Treat it like you would dressing for the office and you'll look a lot more professional.

Hosting clients or that kind of thing--definitely a no go on the white shoes. But if you're out there with your buddies and someone isn't paying you to play their clubs or wear their gear then wear whatever the hell you want. If I was a 5 or less I'd probably be out there in the craziest crap I could find!

I personally look favorably upon people who look like golfers when doing on course business. If you break out some triple pleats and short sleeves that go past your elbow complete with emblem from a resort course you have never played before, I'm going to assume you are behind the curve in your vocation too. White shoes look good with shorts and khakis, but obviously look stupid with black pants. If you wear pants when it's over 85* out, you look like you are trying too hard IMO.

 

All indicators tell me that white shoes are a well accepted fashion as you see a lot more advertising for all whites than brown or other color combo's. If you visit footjoy's website, the main picture for men's shoes (an important category of their business) is an all white shoe. The only TV avertisement I can remember that specifically promotes a certain style of shoe is for all white shoes (Signboy commenting on VJ's "sweet all white Dry Joy Pro's). I don't think footjoy is as edgy of a firm as far as style as some other companies, so the fact that they are fully behind the all white style suggests that this style is well accepted.

 

Of course, if you can dish out a 25+ stroke beat down on a regular basis, people are going to think you know something they don't and think your white shoes are cool. Plaid pants require par or better though! Usually an inverse relationship between score and level of offensiveness relating to plaid pants.

The rule about white is way old, and was meant to apply to women, not men. White golf shoes are always acceptable. You should NOT dress like you're going to the office for every golf round, unless every golf round is where you do all of your business.

I agree that you can wear white after labor day -- haven't you ever watched "What NOT To Wear" on TLC? <-- Sorry...you can probably tell that I'm married.

 

I don't really like white golf shoes...but that's just me...and nobody really asked my opinion :drinks:

I can understand the whole "dress for the golf course like you dress for work" mantra, but that's just not my particular style. I prefer to shake things up when I get on the golf course. Golf style can be so bland; you know how it goes: Khaki pants or shorts with an ashworth polo and black saddle golf shoes (no offense to anyone). That style seems so cookie cutter to me. I just can't resist some j. lindeberg or rosasen apparel when I get out on the course. I've even considered sporting some knickers ala Payne Stewert, but at 27, I don't think I'm quite old enough to don those puppies.

I have some Etonic Saddlebacks that I wear with earth tones. Any other time, I have a pair Footjoy contours in black and brown.

 

I never wear shorts. Just a personal preference style wise.
