My irons are wearing out on the toe side of center!

What would I be doing to cause this?
Anyone....!

I have about a 2 year old set of Titlest 735cm irons. I feel that I am swinging correctly, but my irons are wearing out towards the toe! I'm not sure why. This has never happened to me before.
Every other set of clubs have worn out in the dead center of the short irons.
The set was fit to me and is only barely 1/4" long. (I'm 5' 10" tall, so I don't think that they are too short.)

Anyone have any swing suggestions as to what is causing this?

I am a better than scratch golfer. (My handi's on the + side... no joke!)

I have run out of ideas to try on the range.

Thanks!

You could be coming into the golf ball at too steep of an angle. Also, your irons could be too flat for you as well. Check your divots, if they're deep on the toe side of the club, then your irons might be too flat. If they're just plain deep, you might be getting too steep into them

ps - another thing I've found that caused me to toe it a lot, is releasing the clut too early and not holding the angle between the shaft and my left arm.

Interresting!

I could be coming into the ball too steep. I did try to bring the club more down the line towards impact because I was approaching the ball from too far in-to-out. I could have gone too far.

My irons are only 1* flat and this was in an attempt to stop a bit of a hook. However, they are 1* flat from Titleist's stanard, but are the same lie angle I have used for the past 10 years.

I thought that maybe I was losing some leg drive in my swing. I never thought about the too steep thing.

Anyone else want to chime in as well?

PS- nice pic in the avatar.... who is she?

If your a plus whatever your swing is fine. Don't worry about being to steep. If your on the plus side your doing the right things. Its simple your clubs are to flat for you. Go get fitted and hit some shots off a lie board. If most your marks are on the toe side of your clubs they are to flat and you need to bend them more upright. If this is the case you will start hitting more shots in the center of the face and you will start making marks in the center of your irons.

I do believe you about the too flat thing. However, when I have hit balls off the lie board, the irons don't measure out to be too flat. In fact, the tape on the sole of the club states that they could be even a bit flatter. This being said, there may be some error in the lie board, or the irons could be a tiny bit too long. (But I doubt that too.)

They are about D-4 in swingweight. They could be over-bowing the shaft at impact so that the club is too flat at just that moment. (I guess this would mean that the clubs would be too flat, but it could also mean that they are too heavy. Y/N?)

...Lie angle is flat = marks toward the toe...
Toe strikes can be caused by a too flat lie angle on irons.

Could someone please explain to me where this myth has come from?
Tom Wishon, among others.

I know one thing is that when the strike marks from the lie board are on the toe side 9 out of 10 times the face mark is on the toe. I find wherever the sole of the club hits that where the ball is hitting on the face. My .02 cents.

Let's make a distinction between sole of the club and the face of the club...

If their is a mark towards the toe of the sole of the club, it can indicate a flat lie anlge...

However, it does not mean there will be a mark toward the toe on the face of the club...

Centeredness of contact is influenced much more by path, and club length, not lie angle...

Clubfitting is not a simple black and white process...Unfortunately, too many golfers think it is...

Path and Face Angle will also play a critical role in regards to marks on the sole of the club as well!!!

Please discuss this matter with your PGA Professional and have him/her evaluate your swing as well as your equipment...

So I'm just wondering in your opinion, what are the causes of the toe strike on the face of the club as per the original posters query?

In my (non-professional) opinion, mikpga is 100% correct as far as lie angle having NO effect on where you contact it on the face...and I believe even Mr. Wishon would agree with that (at least according to what he wrote in The Search fo the Perfect Golf Club). As mikepga said, there's a difference between a mark on the sole of the club from hitting a lie board vs. a mark on the clubface from hitting a ball...

I also agree with mjbone23 that you may be swinging too steeply. This is probably way over simplifying it, but I look at the swing in it's most basic form as two arcs: one up and down, and the other around the body; combine the two and you more or less have the swing plane. The up and down arc influences how low or high on the face you hit the ball; the around the body arc influences whether you hit the ball towards the heel or toe. Too much around and not enough up and down (flat) and you'll tend to hit it off the heel and thin; not enough around and too much up and down (steep) and you'll tend to hit it off the toe and fat (or deep divot).

While I agree with mikpga that you should see a good pro, as a + hdcp I think you probably have good enough control over your swing to effectively tweak your swing yourself. Personally, I would start by looking at your ball position. Most people would probably move closer to the ball to correct hitting it off the toe. I think this is wrong...it would tend to make you swing steeper. I would try moving a little FURTHER from the ball and adjusting your stance a bit (bend a little more from the hips to maintain an athletic and balanced posture). This could help you flatten your swing out a bit.

Hope that helps :)

Thanks Pole Position...I've been attacked for my comments...

Another observation in regards to your thoughts...

The more your path becomes outside-in, the steeper your angle of attack becomes...

The more your path becomes inside-out, the more shallow your angle of attack becomes...

Ball position is something StaffBag will want to look at...

This is why it is beneficial for golfers to seek professional instruction, or become better students of the swing motion...

That is one thing I strive to do with all of my students, help them to understand cause and effect, so they can begin to help themselves, vs. asking for 'quick fixes'...
