Grip Weight and Swing Weight

I decided to regrip my clubs and move from the new Tour Velvet (stock grip on Titleist) to something larger (midsize) with some cord.

 

Went with the Golf Pride New Decade Multi-Compounds.

 

After I regripped a wedge to check the impact of the new grips on swingweight, I found that my formerly D5 swingweighted wedge was now just under D3.

 

I do my own grips, but did not realize how much heavier these grips are.

 

Would I be better served by using multiple wraps ( 2 or 3) under a standard size grip, rather than the midsize? Maybe with the Tour Velvet Cords?

 

Are Lamkins a better option?

 

Any input would be appreciated.

Not really D5 to D3 is pretty significant IMO

Do they really feel noticeably lighter? Or is the sw scale number just messing with your head?

The change from standard to Midsize grips affected the swingweight, total clubweight and, of course, grip size. These changes may take a little time to get used to.

As for extra wraps, you would need 7-9 layers of build-up tape to achieve +1/16", which is the typical midsize grip. When it's all said and done, I'm not sure you'd gain anything weight-wise compared to a midsize grip.

Finished regripping this afternoon:

Swingweight changes:

Vokeys from D5 to D3
712 AP2's from D2 to D0
910 Fd from D4 to D2
910 D3 from D5 to D3

We'll see how they play next week.

Just in case, I have a roll of lead tape in cabinet.

I agree. At the [i]grip[/i] end, under the hands, the extra weight of midsize grips amounting to a 2 point change in swingweight is going to be barely noticeable when the clubs are swung. The change will show up as a tangible change on a swingweight scale, but not nearly so much when you're hitting balls.

since the grip is held in the hands, grip weight affects the scale reading but has negligible effect on 'heft'...<0.5 % difference.

If the 2 SW point change was made with changes to the headweight, I'd agree we may have something.
If the 2 SW point change was made with changes to shaft length or weight, meh.
Since the 2 SW point change was made with grip weight, there's nothing to see here.

Great grips for controlling the club. Never going to slip or regrip with these.

Just one problem........

Three days later my hands still hurt. (To clarify, joint pain, not blisters.)

5 grams at the grip end of the club will change SW 1 point. Standard Multicompound weighs 46.5 grams, Midsize weighs 59 Grams (per GP website). That explains the 2 SW change. If you built up a standard grip with tape I think you might experience only a 1 SW change (depending on the tape you use). 6 extra wraps of the type I am used to weighs about 6 grams.

Sorry to thread jack, but I just had my R11 driver hot melted with ~4g of hot melt. Total weight of the head is now ~206g. I am going to the Golf Galaxy Friday to find out the swing weight. What should the swing weight be for a typical 44-45" driver?

If the swing weight is too high, should I get 1/2" cut off the shaft? I wouldn't mind a little stiffer shaft.

First question: Why did you hotmelt?

First statement: Don't alter length to hit a swingweight target. Alter length to fit your stance.

Second statement: Typical swingweight can change as much as 2 to 6 points from UL shaft to HW shaft.

My recommendation: You had it hotmelted. OK. Go hit it. Note how you hit it. Make adjustments based on performance.

Well, in my ongoing search, I have now cut off the NDMC midsize grips. Did not feel like I could release the club (they felt really large!), and the harshness of the grips had my fingers aching.

Regripped yesterday afternoon with standard size Performance Plus 3 Gen in white, with three wraps of tape. Feels larger than a standard Golf Pride, but not as large as midsize.

Still have swingweight issue, but am going to throw a little lead tape on the backs.

They look great; hope they work!!
