i'm looking at purchasing a tour issue R7 425 tp what is the difference between this and a retail tp
what is hot melt and does it have an effect on the ball flight

I don't want to start a huge thread as this has been discussed many times before but, Tour Issued clubs are in most cases the exact thing as the retail version. I believe this is the case with the 425 Tp as well. Some people will pay more for it and yet others won't.

 

Hot Melt is a plastic/rubbery substance that is melted into the head to add head-weight and give the head a more solid feel. Common amount is ~ 6-8 grams.

 

I would also like to know the effect on the ballflight from Hot Melt ;) . My guess is that it would launch slightly higher.

Hi I am from Europe but I can tell you that as far as the head is concerned, the only difference is that there is a T writen next to the serial number that is all.

 

In terms of shaft, the TP shaft are the same, but you can find some different weights, ie weights that are not on the market for eg Reax TP 62 etc.

What you get from TM is a head that has been COR, loft and face angle tested (adjusted) usually with hotmelt added for weight and they generally have slightly lower and less spinny ball flight. Tour heads are usually square to open where the retails are closed. They may be the same as retail but feel better like the ball compresses into the face more and sound 'woodier'. It may just be the hotmelt but I really don't know. What you need to look out for are heads that have been adjusted for players that like them 5* open or heavy toe weighted if that's not for you. The TP tour only shafts are not just different weights but are completely different profile shafts than what you can buy in a store. I've got a tour 62 and a retail 65. They're very different playing shafts.

 

Callaway and Cleveland comp heads have different internal weighting and face angles. They need to be built that way from scratch. It's not like they have hossels that can be adjusted. It doesn't mean they go further if retail specs fit you better but some differences exist even if these heads come of the same lines as production. They're at least special runs or tweaked for different characteristics. My take is that they're the same but not the same and can perform better if they fit you. Is it possible that the companies are a bit more careful about the quality of materials in tour runs? For reliability reasons at high swing speeds it may make sense but we'll never know and they'll never tell. They want consumers to believe that tour players use off the rack equipment. It's still .830 COR regardless.

just get the retail tp, get properly fitted, and save the $.

Ive hit both a tour and a retail one after the other with identical set ups, and there was no difference in distance. Just get the retail

The retail TP is the same as the "tour" TP. As for the shafts, you could accomplisgh the same thing by going thru Fujikura if you want a different weight. The Rombax is now in the Fuji catalog. Like a previous poster, some of this "tour" stuff is out of hand, and just a rip off. Unless Tiger, Ernie, Phil, or someone you recognize as a tour player hands you a club and says "Here...take mine" you are leaving yourself open to be ripped off by a bunch of BS artists who claim everything and anything they own is strictly "tour issue", "one of a kind", ground by Roger Cleveland, bent by Scotty Cameron, and shafted by Tom Stites.

And on another point, why do you need hot melt in a 425TP which has 12 different weight cartridges and over 800 different weighting options???

Tour issue clubs are usually made with less tolerance for error. Like the COR is usually pretty darn exact at .830 while retail is like .8295 or whatever so that they don't have to go back and check all the clubs. Tour issue clubs are usually better assembled and more time is taken with them. There are differences between them and retail clubs.

only other thing might be that the face is more square or alittle open. I have both a retail TP and Tour TP R5 and there is no difference and the hot melt only made it a fraction heavier and to me didnt change the flight.

Some of you who are quick to comment on getting retail and save $ should do some homework. I sold over 20 tour issue 425 TPs in the last few months on this site - none were sold over retail pricing.

 

MWT is more like fine tuning in relation to what hot melt can do. Hot melt allows for more initial bias to fit you swing profile and/or a heavier head is going to give you more versatility in shaft selection.

I play a complete tour issued bag and there is a difference if it is only mental knowing that my equipment is the best I can put my hands on and has passed through the quality control of the manufacturer to stamp t or whatever they do to signify it's tour. I am a scratch to +2 depending on time of year and how much time I'm able to practice. Those people who are taken advantage of by other people is at their own mercy they should do their homework. This is just my .02. I think you made the right decision by buying tour and I priced it also I picked up the TM tour 425 in my sig for $600. I know a TM rep and couldn't have got a retail any cheaper and I got the shaft I wanted.

for me the hotmelt makes a huge difference. since i play a short driver @43.75" the hotmelt adds the weight i need to get it back at D4 without having to heavy heavy screws so that i can keep using the 2-12g's & 2'2g screws with the weight i lost by using a shorter stick. plus it works great to deaden the sound so it doesnt feel like a hollow can. also they place it for me at the very back so i can keep the fade setup but will still have the ball flight i desire. but unless they are making the driver for you it's pointless to waste money on the tour driver b/c the specs maybe way off to what you need. as far as shafts, fuji only offers 55/65/75g weight like TM does.
