MIYAZAKI, Japan (Reuters) -- Tiger Woods began his quest for a third straight Dunlop Phoenix title with a solid 67 to finish the first round two shots off the lead on Thursday.

The world's No. 1 made five birdies over the par-70 Phoenix Country Club course after starting on the back nine, but his exploits were overshadowed by a red-hot Shingo Katayama of Japan, who heads the field after an opening 65.

Dropped shots at the 12th and seventh left Woods in a five-way tie for third with 2006 European Order of Merit winner Padraig Harrington and a trio of Japanese players.

Spain's Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano had nine birdies and five bogeys in an adventurous round of 66 to claim sole possession of second place in the southern Japanese resort of Miyazaki.

Woods had to apologise to Katayama after almost hitting him with a drive while the Japanese player lined up a putt on the 334-yard 13th hole.

"I didn't see the [warning] flags out on the fairway," a sheepish Woods smiled.

"So I hit. I thought they were off the green -- and they weren't. I apologised when I got up there."

I'm sure it was unintentional. He apologised, thats the main thing. I've been there, hit my absolute best that rolls up level with a guy in front. Only happened twice, I apologised and they have been fine about it.

Once in a tournament I accidentally hit into the group ahead of me. I hit a beautiful drive and this hole had a cart path that split the fairway up to about 270 yards. so it hits the cart path then goes flying by the group ahead of me and about 60 yards ahead of them. The good thing was that i had a pithching wedge into a par 5. The bad thing was that the two people in the group were two hot girls and they were really mad at me.

Did anyone see what Jim Rome said about Tiger today? That guy makes me furious.

 

He basically said Tiger might as well be the guy at the muni whose cell phone rings, smokes a joint on the driving range, lays down on the teebox waiting for the group ahead to clear, goes fishing with his 60 foot ball retriever like an old man, and so on and so forth. Obviously Mr. Rome didn't get the memo about what happened :crazy: . That guy irks me like none other ;) .

I hate Jim Rome. He is a world-class a-hole. He thinks he knows everything anout every subject on earth. ESPN really should get rid of him.
