Younger generation converts to Persimmon

I walked the local Muni yesterday afternoon, 100 plus heat index, so not alot of traffic on the course, and ending up playing with another single. NIce enough fellow, mid 30's who hit the ball a mile.

As we shook hands on the first tee, he was playing from the tips, I was teeing off from the whites, using my regualr sunday afternoon classic kit, including Persimmons, he thought it necessary to inform me that he had shot under par on Saturday at course X in the area.

First tee, he flairs his drive to the right, long and OB. Second tee, he produces a wicked duckhook left, playable, but in jail. Frustrated he slams his driver across his bag and SNAP, CRACKLE, POP...

Well, for the nexxt two holes he uses his 2iron off the tee, good results, but I could see he was getting anoyed at this old guy with a steel shafted Persimmon wood outdriving his 2iron.

Finally, on the next 5 par I coaxed him into giving the Persimmon a go. He was a bit hesitate, but after some gentle batter back and forth, he put a peg in the ground, took the Persimmon and after me telling him to just put a smooth swing on it, RIPPED IT, with the sweetest little baby draw I can only dream about.

His eyes looked liked a kid on Christmas morning. He is going to get his regular driver rehafted, BUT, said he will pickup a Persimmon to at least hit on the range, and probaly play on occassion.

The rest of the round he seemed more relaxed and we chatted alot about the direction the golf club industry had taken during the last few decades.

It felt good to pass on a bit of history and give someone a new understanding of what it is like to feel wood meet ball.

As a sidenote, while waiting on the 10th teebox for the group in front to hit, a foursome of all under 30's, I looked in their bags and saw some wonderol old Mac Tourney VIP's. The guy they belonged to said he had gotten them from his Grandfather., and although he didn't hit them as well as he did his moderns, he still enjoyed playing with them more.

My father used to have a persimmon driver and every time he hit at least a half dozen people would turn around to see" who was using a baseball bat to hit golf balls." I always got a kick out of that.

I am told that heads always turn when I or others playing persimmon woods tee off at courses we play at. Young people are interested but thats as far as it goes. Most golfers play the metal head drivers "for the distance". I can understand that thinking.

Played both days this weekend with Persimmons. Went out as a single and got paired up with some 30 somethings each round. The old woods generated alot of questions. Let them hit a couple off a few tees when we were not pressed. A couple of the lads asked where they could get a set. Told them the standard ebay answer, then informed them of a couple of local places I can usually find some in relatively good condition. I think I will begin to see more put in play. Have already seen a few guys break them out on the range since I have went to playing them at least 50 percent of my rounds this season.
