Who makes the best handmade

In your opinions who makes the best handmade? I know there are plenty of Scotty lovers out there but how do his handmades compare to your Mills, Byrons, and others?

I guess would need to have a contest...Give each of the guys the same tools to work with.. a billet of metal.. have them go at it. Then judge them for creativity ,speed and finished product. Winner gets a cool million and a Title .. Putter maker of the Year.

I think it ought to be set up for real. They shouldn't need cash, just a trophy showing they are the best. Then, the competition get's written up in the golf magazines and an hour long segment on The Golf Channel.

 

Make each named principal (Scotty, Byron, and David) hand make a putter to the same specs in regard to head shape/weight, but allow them free reign over shaft, grip, cover, finish, etc. The entire production process would be taped and judged by 3 touring pro's (1 from each camp) and 3 amatuers picked via random drawing.

 

Auction off the 3 putters with all proceeds going to the winner's favorite charity, named in advance.

 

Finally, they would have to be truly handmade, whatever that is.

 

We've got rep's of each person on this site...any of you want to see if this could be set up?

He probably wouldn't. At this point he has little to gain and virtually everything to lose.

As far as Scotty, it would do him a lot more harm to not show, than to show and not win.

 

Why wouldn't he show? He's the best, isn't he? This way, he could prove it once and for all.

 

Not trying to start anything ugly (and hope no one else will, either), but everywhere I turn, it's Scotty this, Scotty that. Even this thread starts off with "Scotty or his competition?". So, why not give the smaller guys a chance to take on Scotty in his field?

Forgive my ignorance, but I'm not familiar with Whitlam putters, nor who David is.

 

What legal reason would keep someone out of a friendly competition?

This is awesome. The golf Channel could do a whole season of this. Competition style or Pimp my Putter style or just one craftsman per show.

He works his day job and then does putters all night... sometimes fitting in time for his family (cool)

 

I am sure he would like to do it... but probably have to decline.

Just think of the exposure this would bring to anyone in the contest.We could also do it right at everyones shop. The film crews could film each one as they make the putter. That would make it fair to each putter maker.

Would you guys say Scotty is a better putter maker or just better at marketing his product? I've seen many Scotty handmades and must say I have seen better looking hand mades from David Mills and others. I havent seen many handmades from Byron. Post some of your handmades on here guys!

This is honestly a pointless arguement though it's a valid question if you took every member here they would each give you different criteria for what makes a great handmade putter. It's simply comparing apples and oranges, there is no right or wrong answer to who makes the best.

I think we all know who would win the marketing contest.

 

The biker-build-off format is spot on. That's what initially came to mind for me too.

I think Scotty has only done one handmade in the last few years. Do you consider CNC'd putters as handmade? Handmade gives it a certain look and feel but, like others said, there is no best. I would just be considered lucky to own one from any of the top line guys.
