TPI- Day 1

Today was the first day of my Level 1 Certified Golf Fitness Instructor workshop. It was a long day packed with info; some of it review, but lots of new research correlating swing faults to physical limitations.

 

Greg Rose started out talking about the components needed to address the building of the ultimate golfer by comparing the "Triangle of Player Development" of the early 90's (or B.T.- Before Tiger)and today's "Hexagon of Player Development"

The "Triangle" of the early 90's consisted of

1. Instruction

2. Mental Strategies

3. Equipment

 

The "Hexagon" of today consists of:

1. Basic Instruction

2. Shot Making Skills

3. Course Management

4. Mental Strategies

5. Proper Equipment

6. Physical Conditioning

 

The next portion was a review of Kinematic Sequencing and using 3-D technology to determine efficiency of a player's swing. Proper Kinematic Sequencing is one of the keys to good Ball Striking.

 

Dave Philips then went over descriptions of the Twelve Most Common Swing Faults and their possible physical (and other) causes.

1. S-Posture

2. C-Posture

3. Loss of Posture

4. Flat Shoulder Plane

5. Early Extension

6. Over the Top

7. Sway

8. Slide

9. Reverse Spine Angle

10. Hanging Back

11. Casting/ Early Release

12. Chicken Winging

 

We ended the day (last 3 hours) with Physical Screening. It consisted of 14 tests to help determine the physical limitations of the golfer. They went a little deeper than the Fitness Summit, as I suspected they would. We used a goniometer for more accuracy in our measurements as well.

 

Tomorrow morning, I will be doing the physical screen on 4 or 5 other students and the afternoon will be filled with exercises they use at TPI to help correct some of the physical limitations found in the screen.

 

Looking forward to another long day of talking about golf fitness. Man, I need to get a life!

Super old topic... but a local TPI teacher is giving a class and will be doing the 14 physical examns for some students... i was invited to participate... im curious to know what the 14 screens are...

The Physical Screen Consists of:
Pelvic Tilt- arch & round spine in 5 iron posture
Pelvic Rotation- rotate pelvis while keeping shoulders stable
Torso Rotation- rotate torso while keeping hips stable
Overhead Deep Squat- Squat keep arms overhead. Adjustments will be made once attempted
Toe Touch- feet together, touch toes
90/90 Shoulder ROM- 2 sets of tests. Bend arm at 90* rotate shoulder keeping upper arm in place
Single Leg Balance- Captain Morgan stance with eyes closed, goal is 16-20 seconds
Lat Flexibilty- stande w/ back flat against wall. Extend arms overhead and try and touch wall w/ thumbs.
Lower Quarter Rotation- Hard to explain in short. Standing: internal/external hip rotation.
Seated Trunk Rotation- Seated with club on chest. Try to rotate thoraco/lumbar spine past 60*
Hip Bridge with Leg Extension (goal is to hold up for :20)
Reach Roll & Lift- kneel in child's pose. Extend arms out & roll palms up. Try & elevate the arm while keeping it straigh.

*Your TPI guy will let you know exactly what your testing throughout. This is just a brief description of the test. From this test we can pretty much determine what you'll do in the golf swing without even seeing it.

I notice you said 14 tests. The screening has changed in the last year or 2. They have 11 standard screens w/ an additional 2 as optional. The last one I mentioned is one of the optional screens. Just thought I'd let you know in case you screen is a little different than the one I mentioned.

You'd be surprised with how simple it seems and how difficult some of it is for the general population. Most common issues I see are balance, toe touch and hip bridge for time
