For those who have played both JDM and domestic irons, did you play standard in both? For example, most domestic clubs are .25 to .5 inches shorter. Did you order the JDM clubs longer or did you just play standard in both?

I put butt plugs into one set, making them longer, and left the other alone because it was already playing well. There is about a half inch difference between the two but they both play well.

Most JDM are 37.5 standard 5 iron.

In my experience 37.75 is more the standard length for a JDM 5-iron.

Depends on the shaft. For NS Pros, its mostly 37.75 for JDM 5I and for S200 its 37.5.

For those wanting to extend, you may need to adjust the lie angles as well.

I was always led to believe JDM standard was 37.75 5i.

Even though I am 6' tall barefoot I still play my irons -1/4" shorter than JDM standard at 37.5" 5i at D4 SW. Seems weird I know but the numbers and contact don't lie. Getting a proper shaft fitting for not just shaft type and profile and brand but LENGTH and WEIGHT really opened my eyes. And made a large difference in my ball striking. With longer shafts I would want to come over the top and make toe side contact. Now the club drops into the slot and I have dime size impact zones on my irons that are center to slightly heel side. It is like a revelation...

Moral of the story: Don't automatically assume you'll need to change them, and see what you think. Might find out the shorter length is beneficial to you.

Hardest thing for a lot of folks to get their head around is that in the golf industry there is "NO STANDARD" for anything....every manufacture has their own idea what what they want a club to be like. So...different "standard" lengths, lofts lies and weights etc etc.
At Miura Golf Inc. the "standard" is 37.75" for 5 irons and 38" for 5 irons when the shafts are under 100 grams. Most JDM manufacturers are using those numbers too........BUT not all...before you shell out the money for some top end irons...or clubs of any type....make sure you know what specs the maker is going to follow.

Looking back my question was not clear. Yes I know there is no such thing as an exact standard. I was wondering if anyone was fit to "standard" (37.75-38" 5 iron) and decided to order JDM in "standard" (37.5ish) and had success switching to shorter clubs. I am interested in buying some onoffs but I noticed the lengths were slightly shorter in "standard", but seeing that I am average height, maybe the JDM "standard" actually makes more sense than the US "standard". Hope that made sense.. and thanks for all the responses.

They're not in the bag right now and I haven't measured them, but my Miura Giken Passing Point 9003s are definitely shorter, guessing 37.5". Since I'm of average height @ 5'10", they're working well for me.

I think there are small differences in lie between manufacturers but if you know your fit and order your clubs new and from some good dealers you can get them at your spec. In my case I bought second hand and needed to do my own fitting to get the comfort and performance I wanted. There are now fitters who can fit me well, but I'm a tinkerer and needed something to do with my time so I just stumbled about until I found it. Adjusting shaft length is easier and safer to do at home than adjusting lie, especially when the amounts are very small.

I am of the opinion that if your ball striking is consistent enough (I'm not saying 100% consistent), then you WILL indeed notice even a quarter inch difference in length and the effect in the effective playing lie angle which has more impact on making good impact pun intended.

What I am saying is, whatever length you go for, 37.5 to 38.5 (I have seen JDM irons set up long as well), make sure you get the lie angles checked and bent right for your swing. That is one of the several things you need to look out for in finding the right setup but one of the more important factors for me. FYI, I used to play 38, then 37.75 and now 37.5 in my 5I and I am hitting longer and more accurately than before. It's not so much about height unless you are 8 feet tall or 2 feet short but about getting the lie angle right for you amongst other things.
