Ping Clubs And Rust?

sandy

Recommended Posts

I have been reading on several other sites about some rusting problems ping is having with some irons. The most recent ones I've read about are the S-59s. I had never really looked closely at my S-59 Tours since they aren't beautiful chromed blades anyway. But I did the other day and sure enough I am starting to see red on the faces in the grooves and the occasionaly red coming out of the ping and S-59 number. Has anyone else experienced this on the S-59s or other ping models?

My brother had a set of eye2s many years ago that had a very small red dot in one groove but that is the only experience with rust I had ever had with pings. I contacted my ping rep. and he said they had a new coating for the irons and the S-59s in particular and to send mine back after the season for treatment. This would seem to indicate that they acknowledge they some problem however small in sample.

Of all the PING models I've owned (ZING2, ISI-S, EYE2+, G2) I've never had a problem with rust.  My best guess is that there may be fertilizer in the grooves or cavity and letting it set that may be causing the problem...

I don't play any courses where they use huge amounts of fertilizer. And I was always very careful to keep these clubs clean and dry---even during the round. This was an attempt to maintain the original looks which was futile because polished stainless goes dull in a very few swings (at least on the sole). As I said the fact that the rep. volunteered a new finish got me to thinking there might be a problem specifically with the S-59s. Your experience has been the same as mine with all my previous pings up until this set. (68, 69, Anser, KI, KII, KIII rail, KIV, eye, eye2, Zing2, ISI, i3 Blade---no problem).

I too have a set of s59's and they have rust spots in the grooves and in the cavities :clapping:

My i3blades on the other hand , which have been played a whole lot more, have NO spots to speak of !

Guess I will be contacting Ping UK regarding this to see what they say.

Thanks for the heads up

I just got a call from my golf shop and they have a new set of S-59s from Ping for me. I'm just to take the rusting set in to the shop for return to ping. These supposedly have the new coating so I'll see if they look any different and hopefully no rust for some time.

I picked them up today and they look just the same, so if there is a new coating it really isn't that obvious. So now the test begins to see if these rust as well. Hope not. What I really wanted was a set of S-59s with the ferrule not the polished tour head. That would retain the rust resistant tumbled finish that ping has been known for. Alas Wrx will not do that. I probably should have had them send me just a set of S-59s and done the ferrule myself. But they were adamant exact replacement, so we will see.
