any good courses near the Poconos?

I grew up in the Poconos and I can tell you that most of Eastern Pennsylvania considers itself the Poconos, so it kind of depends where you will actually be.

My favorite course was Great Bear (in East Stroudsburg). They were semi-public, then private, then out of business, and now re-opened as public. I don't know the current condition, but it was a fantastic layout and in amazing condition in its heyday.

Yo JP where in the Poconos? It is a catch-all phrase area that means you can be anywhere up to an hour from some courses I'll throw at ya.

Best ones:
Great Bear -- Public now. Great shape.
Jack Frost National -- Great place besides weekends, too busy, slow PoP.
Buck Hill -- Donald Ross. Old school. Short but always in great shape.
Woodloch -- Eh, over rated for me. Great shape but quirky design. Great spa.
Skytop -- Another short and old course but the property itself is just spectacular.

Other than that depending on your proximity to the NJ/NY boarder Ballyowen and Architects are worth the drive.

Shoot me a PM when you are up this way, both courses I'm a member at shouldn't be much more than a 25-45 minute drive for ya.

I've played just about every course that exists in NEPA..

1. Woodloch - my personal favorite
2. Great Bear - played a number of years ago when private, everything I hear now is positive
3. Buck Hill - Blue/White combo, excellent old school Donald Ross Course
4. Jack Frost National - still was a little "new" when I played it
5. Shawnee - A little pricey but a solid 27 hole facility

Skytop is a great course too but can be expensive. Water Gap CC is a favorite of mine for the money.

My parents live around the area. I'm a big fan of Blue Ridge Trail. 27 holes and less than $50 even on weekends.

Just played Buck Hill on the Blue/White for 72 over a long weekend, it was a blast.
