How Did You Start Playing Golf?

girlfriend became fiancee became wife. her dad is a golf -nut. he's retired so i always try to pay for him and that makes him angry so that is good.

she got me into it and wham i got hooked like i was on crack. Here is more or less why i think i am addicted to golf/ key factors in my love of it:

1. Equipment/gadgets are endless. You have 13 clubs + putter and have to decide when to use what with what consequence or reward. Then the clip on tee holder, brush, towels, etc... Love that stuff.

2. You get more proportionately than you put into it. What i mean by that is the swing from a driver produces something that goes a lot farther than what you put into it. So the effort from a swing can produce something that flies 200-300 yards when you didn't think that the club + ball would equal that. I saw this happen when we took a guest out and she having never hit a ball hit a 5 wood or something 180 yards and was in shock with the result of the reward for what swing she did, just utter amazement.

3. every course is different. Both wife and i didn't really realize that in general all courses have 4xpar 3, 4xpar 5, etc... but the order of them, the hills or not, the water or not, the desert or not, the bad rough or traditional rough, or trees, etc... all vary, making for some interesting things. Personally i love doglegs of either way, forced carries, and layup holes with water infront of short par 4's.

4. generally speaking, nice people you play with .. i'd say 19/20 are nice people i have met playing over the last 4 years all over the usa, uk, sweden, & the netherlands so far.

5. walking and carrying the bag. If a course is cart-path only, it is faster and more enjoyable + exercise to carry that bag the whole way. generally non-resort courses you can walk them and that is nice with the wifey.

6. nice clubhouse and a sandwich after the round...

7. ok, i like nice traditional golf clothes. especially the hot ones my wife wears.

BEND OF THE RIVER GC · February 13, 2007

When I was 9 I lived near the 6th tee of Bend of the River GC 9 hole course in Lake Luzerne, NY. I used to sell golf balls I found in the ponds and woods as well as drinks to the golfers before they teed off on #6. I used to make pretty good dough in the summer time!

I then moved and took up the game a few years later when I was a senior in HS in Dublin, Ohio. HUGE golf town by the way....Did not play for 3 years while in Germany but I now play as much as possible!!!!

Oh yeah, I still have NOT played Bend of the River GC, but I will THIS SUMMER, 30 years later!
