Hogan Sacrilege?

Recommended Posts

During my hunt for playable persimmon I found a set of Slazenger Hogan's 1-4 woods, completely original shaft bands, grips and matching serial ferrules. They are beat up but still playable. These will be a relatively easy resto project. However I know that I will never play them without decent grips on them. The originals are too skinny for me as well as being both hard & slick.

Are these Hogans of any special collector value that would cause me to rethink about removing the grips??

Fluffy-

First of all, congratulations on a unique find.

Got any photos of the soleplates? The MacGregor Ben Hogan 693 persimmon woods had 4 screws in the diamond pattern.

The Ben Hogan Golf Company persimmon woods also had 4 screws in the inverted "Y" pattern.

It might not be considered sacrilege to consider removing old and slick leather grips on Hogan/Slazenger clubs-

The clubs actually used by Ben Hogan that are on display at Golf House (the USGA Museum in NJ) have cord grips.

Thanks, I will take a sole plate pic later today, nice work on the spelling correction!

I'd also not write off a set of leather grips quite so easy yet. Not quite sacrilege to me, but the quality and craftsmanship that went into making these, and their durability is a shame to destroy.

I was able to rejuvenate the originals on a set of 62-63 Staff Fluid Feel Turfriders using some leather care products. Steps I would follow:

- Use a mild dish soap and the hottest water you can put your hands in with a brush, and brush the crap out of the grips without putting them in the water. Dry thoroughly. This takes off all the surface dirt and oil.

- Soak 'em with this crap.

- Let it sit on for a few hours then clean it off.

- Next day, do it again, let it sit on for a few hours then wipe it off

When you go golfing, soak a corner of your golf towel with water, and every time you want to swing one, give it a quick wipe with the towel. Tackiest grip you will ever play.

Cheers Scooter, my issue is not so much about restoring the grip's tackiness, it's more of a fitment issue. The original grips are simply too small / skinny for me.

I saw you said they were slim, but a guy can hope.

Absolutely love leather grips - never found anything better from a tackiness perspective. When I still had my ARC blades, I had them redone with Golf Pride Tour Wrap midsize grips. Dust stuck to them so bad (i.e. cart path dust), and I was always fighting to keep them tacky.

Mind you, I also love cord grips too.

Guess I'm really turning into an old f*rt.

Is it possible to unwrap them, put some buildup tape on them and re-wrap them?

That's some food for thought, I could add a rib while I'm at it.

Here are a couple more pics.
