Hogan iron question(s).

Recommended Posts

I just picked up a set of 1993-1994 Hogan Forged Apex irons, 2-E, with Ft. Worth on the hosel. Beautiful looking irons with Apex 3 shafts. I was wondering if any wedges (gap, sand) besides the Equalizer were made in this model? If not what would be a good forged Hogan wedge to start looking for?

I was also wondering how the Apex 3 shaft from that time matched up with Dynamic Gold. Would it be close to R-300?

I hit them tonight for the first time and they will take some time to adjust to, for sure. But they are gorgeous. Very similar to the cameo model I think.

Thanks.

There is a sand wedge that matches the set.

There is no gap wedge available in this set. Hogan didn't make a specific gap wedge until the '99 Apex line came out. His sets always went E (48*-51* depending on make/model) to the SW (56*)

The Apex 3 is pretty close to the R-300 IMHO. The Apex is a great feeling shaft. The only shaft I like more than DGS.

Old stuff:
1962 Tommy Armour AT2W Driver   1953 Macgregor M65W EOM 3 wood   1978 H&B PowerBilt Citation 4 wood
1984 Ben Hogan Apex PC 2-E   1968 Wilson Dual Wedge
1964 Acushnet O-SET M6S Bullseye Putter

New stuff
Cobra ZL 10.5 driver (Matrix HD6 s-flex)  Titleist TSR2 18* fairway wood (Matrix Code-8 s-flex)   Adams A2P 20* hybrid (Rombax 8D07HB s-flex)
Titleist 716 MB irons 4-PW (Apex 4 soft-stepped)    Callaway Mack Daddy wedges 52, 56, 60 (DG S200)

I managed to pick up a forged sand wedge, I think from 2005 or so. Does anyone know how I could obtain a ferrule that matches my 93-94 set? That ferrule has the long black section followed by red, blue, red, and then black rings. The ferrule on the 2005 wedge is not the best. I find as I get older I am much more about style than substance. Should be the other way around I would think.

Also I would like to find an Apex Wedge Flex shaft label as well. The wedge did not have one even though the seller claimed the wedge was 'new'.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

To my knowledge, The Ben Hogan Company, didn't have flex on their wedge shaft labels, just the apex label with no number 1 being ladies and 5 being an X.

I also don't recall ever seeing a flex notation on their wedge shaft labels.

Wow. I am impressed. My wife would kill me if I had that many clubs. I have a lot now that I have to continually 'hide'.

I am really just looking for a label I can affix to the shaft. Just aesthetics really. Plus a ferrule to match the 1992/93/94 Apex Forged irons. The one from House Of Forged is close but does not have the final black ring above the red one.

That is just the Hogan side, I also have MacGregor (+- 20 sets), Wilson (10 sets), Ram (2 Sets), Mizuno (3 sets), Precept (1 Set), Titleis (1 set), Top Flite (2 sets), Maxfli/Dunlop (1 Set), Tommy Armour (2 sets), H&B's (1 set), AVDP (1) and a set of Epon's. I should probably let go of some of them, and way in the near future...

Which models were sold when Hogan was playing Mcgregor clubs in the 40's? I know the book The Caddy Who Knew Hogan mentions Macgregor Silver Scots as Hogan's club. But there are also Macgregor Ben Hogan models such as the 1622c parmakers.

What were the actural club models Hogan play back in the 40's?

In the picture on top is the Macgregor from the 40's. Bottom is the Hogan precision from the 50's.

I believe Mr. Hogan played Tommy Armour's since he is quoted in many sources as stating the clubs with his name on them were "department store junk" and was one of the many issues which lead to him leaving MacGregor and forming The Ben Hogan Company in late 1953. I know there are those on this forum who believe that Mr. Hogan played the same irons he endorsed, and point to the 1 iron at the USGA museum as proof. I personally believe the 1 iron is another of Mr. Hogan's ruses, he was famous for letting people believe what they wanted to believe. Of course, I could be wrong although pictures of him holding clubs in the early to mid '40's show irons very similar to MacGregor Tommy Armour Silver Scot 3852's and woods similar to the Tommy Armour Silver Scot Rec. No. 4371, with a swept back sole-plate with 5 screws and a 5 screw face insert. It is known which putter he used, a MacGregor Spur from about the same time frame.

How many different sets of Macgregor Hogan's were made? I seem to have seen alot of them with different rec #'s.
I have 8 different models of Hogan Macgregor, unfortunately they are in storage so no pics available. None are Tourney, they all are store model.I have a attached a picture of clubs he used to win the 3 majors in 1953 that are on display at far Hills NJ. They have different reg no. than the 1622 model he used at Merion but same head design.

Btw, I currently own approximately 25 full sets of Hogan Irons dating from 1956 Slazenger Precisions to Apex Edges and approximately 45 Hogan wedges, none of which have a flex on the shaft.
For some Hogan E wedges sold as part of a set, the flex number will appear on the E wedge shaft label. That is the case with my 1984 Apex PC E wedge (4 inside the sun symbol) and 1999 Hogan Apex Plus E wedge (4 inside the circle).

JMSDKS,

In the event you're still hunting for a matching SW for your Ft. Worth Apex Redlines, here is what it looks like.

Hi guys,

I also have a set of the Apex ft worth irons and was hoping to get some era appropriate wedges to go along with them.

I'm having a hard time finding what Hogan wedges are from the early 90's. From what I have found the Tom kite K grinds, the Hogan BeCu wedges and the tour series 2 wedges seem to be from that era, but I can't confirm that. Does anyone know?

Thanks!

Hogan K Grind ('91 - '92), Special SI BeCu ('88 - '90), Special SI ('84 - '90) are of the vintage. Not sure on the Tour Series, comparable or a couple of years newer I'm assuming. The W grind (Lanny Watkins) was another of that era, Assuming your Apex's are the ones with "Ft. Worth, Tx" on the hosel.

The Special SI is my favorite of the bunch. Still use a still in good shape one in the more modern bag. The weight just feels right.

Sounds good, thanks for the reply. My irons are the ones with the ft worth stamped on the hosel, 2-E with apex 4. I'm planning on playing them, even though I'm not good enough haha. I just think they are cool!

I'm still trying to figure out the lofts of the irons as well. I checked the forums and Google, but had no luck. Currently, I'm assuming they are similar to the 88 redlines. It would be nice to know for wedge gapping. The redlines had a 49 degree E, so I may try to go 53,57 .
